[en] An evaluation of the 175Lu(n,2n)174Lu, 175Lu(n,2n)/sup 174m/Lu, and 175Lu(n,3n)173Lu reactions from threshold to 20 MeV is presented. Available experimental data were renormalized to a consistent set of standards and were used along with results from statistical-preequilibrium model calculations to produce recommended curves for each of these reactions

AbstractAbstract
[en] Gabor or plasma lenses have previously been used to focus intense beams of positive ions at energies from 10 keV to 5 MeV. It is the large electrostatic field of the non-neutral plasma in the Gabor lens which is responsible for the focusing. Focusing an ion beam with a given sign of charge in a Gabor lens requires a non-neutral plasma with the opposite sign of charge as the beam. A Gabor lens constructed at Fermilab has been used to focus a 30 keV proton beam with good optical quality. We discuss studies of the action of a Gabor lens on a beam of negative ions. A Gabor lens has been considered for matching an H/sup /minus// beam into an RFQ in the redesign of the low energy section of the Fermilab linac. 9 refs., 3 figs., 1 tab

AbstractAbstract
[en] Prompt gamma-ray spectroscopy is used in a wide variety of applications for determining material compositions. High-quality photon-production data from thermal-neutron capture reactions are essential for these applications. Radiation transport codes, such as MCNP(trademark), are often used to design detector systems, determine minimum detection thresholds, etc. These transport codes rely on evaluated nuclear databases such as ENDF (Evaluated Nuclear Data File) to provide the fundamental data used in the transport calculations. Often the photon-production data from incident neutron reactions in the evaluations are of relatively poor quality. We have compiled the best experimental data for thermal-neutron capture for the naturally occurring isotopes for elements from H through Zn as well as for 70,72,73,74,76Ge, 149Sm, 155,157Gd, 181Ta and 182,183,184,186W. This compilation has been used to update the ENDF evaluations for 1H, 4He, 9Be, 14N, 16O, 19F, Na, Mg, 27Al, 32S, S, 35,37Cl, K, Ca, 45Sc, Ti, 51V, 50,52,53,54Cr, 55Mn, 54,56,57,58Fe, 58,60,61,62,64Ni, 63,65Cu and 182,183,184,186W. In addition, the inelastic cross sections and corresponding secondary-photon distributions were updated for 16O. Complete new evaluations were submitted to ENDF for 35,37Cl. This paper will discuss the evaluation effort and the production of the MCNP data library, ACTI, based on the new evaluations. Data from the ENDF evaluations for 28-30Si were also included in the ACTI library for completeness. The silicon evaluations were updated in 1997 and include the latest experimental data for radiative capture.

AbstractAbstract
[en] Second-harmonic emission produced by the interaction of a 130-fs laser pulse with solid aluminum has been spectrally analyzed. For an angle of incidence near 20 degree sign , the specular second harmonic is blueshifted when the laser intensity exceeds 5x1016 W /cm2 . This effect is also observed in particle-in-cell simulations of the experiment. The blueshift is interpreted as a signature of the onset of absorption due to the anomalous skin effect. [en] Structural and transport properties of Cs8Cd4SN42 are reported. Cs8Cd4Sn42 has a thermal conductivity that is unusually low for a cystalline solid (1 W m-1 K-1 at room temperature). This low lattice thermal conductivity is associated with the rattling of cesium in the tetrakaidecahedral cavities, as indicated by the large atomic displacement parameters of Cs in the tetrakaidecahedra. Resonant X-ray powder diffraction measuerments indicate that all of the cadmium is located on one of three inequivalent framework sites. There is no evidence for any framework vacancies in the material

[en] Type-II superconductors in magnetic fields >Hc1 form a regular array of vortices (Abrikosov-lattice). Vortices exposed to a current J perpendicular to H move collectively due to the Lorentz-force, producing a voltage and thereby destroying superconductivity. Point disorder pins vortices. This leads to destruction of Abrikosov-lattice, nonlinear response to J, vanishing linear resistivity ρlin=lim J → 0 E/J = 0, new superconducting phase: vortex glass, experiments and simulations (Gauge glass model): in two dimensions Tc=0 in three dimensions Tc > 0 (orig.)

[en] We present a Monte Carlo study of the d=3 gauge glass and the XY spin glass models in the vortex representation. We investigate the critical behavior of these models by a scaling analysis of the linear resistivity and current-voltage characteristics, both in the limits of zero and strong screening of the vortex interactions. Without screening, both models show a glass transition at a finite temperature and, within the numerical accuracy, exhibit the same critical exponents: z∼3.1 and ν=1.3±0.3. With strong screening, the finite-temperature glass transition is destroyed in both cases and the same exponent ν=1.05±0.1 is found at the resulting zero-temperature transition. copyright 1997 The American Physical Society

AbstractAbstract
[en] High-quality photon-production data from thermal-neutron-capture reactions are important for many applications, including oil-well logging, planetary gamma-ray spectroscopy, and environmental techniques. Radiation-transport codes usually access photon-production data from the national U.S. nuclear database, ENDF/B. To improve the photon-production data for thermal-neutron capture, we have compiled and evaluated the energies and intensities of gamma rays for most naturally occurring isotopes with Z<31 and for a few heavy isotopes. The new compilation of photon-production data is being incorporated into the latest ENDF/B evaluations for each isotope and will be provided for future releases of the ENDF/B database
