AbstractAbstract
[en] The sediment trap NAP-1 was successfully recovered and the materials have been analyzed for a set of bio- and geochemical components. The trap mooring NAP-2 was deployed and recovered but no analyses have been completed. The bulk fluxes are relatively low at this site and are approximately 50% biogenic and 50% terrigenous. The flux of terrigenous material is very high due to primary atmospheric inputs and horizontal transport of resuspended sediments. The buoyant particle fluxes are also extremely low. The accumulation of material in the sediments reflects the crustal nature of the vertical flux and also shows the normal loss of labile biogenic phases

[en] A hospital can prepare for a radiation disaster with relative ease. It doesn't take an immense effort or scads of cash for fancy machines, just common sense and a good plan. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Most Canadian hospitals are ill-prepared to handle the surge of patients that could result from a large-scale radiation emergency, say Canadian disaster preparedness experts. The ongoing radiation threat in Japan, the result of damage to a nuclear power plant during the country's recent earthquake, has rekindled concerns about the lackadaisical approach to preparing for such an event in Canada, which has 22 nuclear power plants. AbstractAbstract
[en] The Pauli equation and definition of probability current and density for a particle in weak metric and arbitrary electromagnetic fields is discussed. To formulate non-relativistic quantum mechanical problems in arbitrary electromagnetic fields and weak metrics (non-inertial systems, gravitational fields which are distant fields of arbitrary distribution of masses, gravitational waves) it is not necessary to make use of the general-relativistic Dirac equation. Close analogies exist to the known Pauli theory with electromagnetic fields. The corresponding Hamiltonians are given for different metric fields. For quantum systems (H-atoms) which are disturbed by a homogeneous gravitational field and a gravitational wave the resulting shift of energy levels and the transition probability is calculated. AbstractAbstract
[en] Comparing the most important basis equations of physics, one notices a close relation between the physical sphere of experience, the geometrical objects used, and the number algebra occurring. A way will be demonstrated how to carry out from physical point of view an extension of the number algebras R, C, Q used until now to the octonion algebra THETA. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] It is shown that a full real Dirac theory can operate only with at least 8-dimensional real-valued matrices. The most general form of these Dirac theory consists of three independent Dirac equations for three lepton fields Ψ(α) connected only by the algebra of their discrete PCT-symmetries. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] In assessing the severity of degraded core accidents in light water reactors, limited credit is taken currently for scrubbing of fission products, either vapors or aerosols, in water pools. The development and use of more realistic scrubbing decontamination factors (DF's) could have a significant effect on the perceived safety of nuclear power plants. In order to provide a technique for calculating more realistic scrubbing DF's, the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) is sponsoring a program which includes development of an analytical model for scrubbing of fission product aerosols from steam/noncondensible gas mixtures injected into subcooled or saturated water pools under appropriate accident conditions. Battelle-Columbus is carrying out experiments designed to provide data for development and validation of the predictive model. Key hydrodynamic features in characterizing the transfer of aerosol from the incoming gas phase to the liquid pool include the interphase contact time and the interfacial area available for transfer. Hydrodynamic parameters which affect these key features were varied over ranges defined by analyses of several degraded core accidents carried out with the MARCH computer code. This paper presents the results of the first phase of the experimental program, a study of hydrodynamics of steam/noncondensible gas mixtures injected into a water pool through a single orifice

AbstractAbstract
[en] We have determined the thermal criterion for the Laser Megajoule cryogenic target that leads to a uniform layer of deuterium-tritium as specified for ignition. Thermal models were created, and computational fluid dynamics software was used to calculate this criterion in a spherical geometry as a function of capsule thermal conductivity. According to the values obtained, we have studied the possibility of removing anti-convection baffles in the cryogenic target. Results are presented in this paper and indicate that anti-convection baffles can be removed only if the gas density inside the cryogenic target is reduced and/or if the hydrogen content is reduced. AbstractAbstract
[en] The base-catalysed exchange of a proton of the methyl groups in acetanilides can be used to incorporate deuterium into these amides. 4'-Hydroxyl-2[2H]acetanilide (acetaminophen, paracetamol) can be prepared by the demethylation with boron tribromide of 4'-methoxy-2[2H] acetamide obtained by this base-catalysed exchange.
