AbstractAbstract
[en] The mechanism for plasma ion heating by electromagnetic radiation is considered. Two oppositely directed electromagnetic waves in the plasma can create a beat wave, which gives rise to oscillatory perturbations in the density and velocity profiles. When a plasma element undergoes compression and expansion over a large range, viscous heating of the ions occurs. In the absence of electron-ion collisions the electrons oscillate without acquiring any energy, so that the energy of the electromagnetic field is converted directly to thermal energy of the ions. An explanation of this heating mechanism is presented, based on the laws of momentum and energy conservation. 10 refs., 1 fig

AbstractAbstract
[en] The results of experiments on the ''Kalmar'' Laser System, theoretical analysis of nanosecond laser interaction with shell targets, and the processes in laser-produced plasma corona are all discussed. Experiments show the main contribution into absorption is due to inverse bremsstrahlung. Classical Spitzer thermal conductivity gives a possibility to obtain good agreement of the theoretical, experimental and numerical results of the state and dynamics of plasma corona

[en] On the basis of two-dimensional numerical calculations the stability was studied of compression of thin-wall shell targets upon their exposure to the laser radiation with the energy in the order of 1 KJ. Requirements are formulated on the accuracy of target manufacturing and on the deviation from the spherical symmetry of the target exposure in order to ensure the stable compression

AbstractAbstract
[en] The plane self-consistent problem of absorption and reflection of an incident monochromatic electromagnetic wave by a spreading high-temperature plasma is considered. Interaction between the radiation and matter is described within the framework of the quasistationary Maxwell equations for the light wave field and the gasodynamic equations which include electron thermal conductivity. A numerical solution of the equations is presented for the neodymium laser radiation (ω=1.8x1015 s-1) with different pulse duration and power densities ranging from 1012 to 1016 V/cm2 and plane uniform targets made of DT or (CH2)sub(n). The discussion is centering around the efficiency of energy transfer from the laser radiation to the plasma. The calculations performed take into account both bremsstrahlung and a number of collective processes. At power densities of laser radiation more than 1013 V/cm2 processes of abnormal absorption are pointed out to commence to prevail, resulting in significantly lower values of reflected energy
