AbstractAbstract
[en] The study of muon capture by complex nuclei is of two-fold interest : (i) to determine the precise form of the muon capture interaction and the magnitude of the coupling constants and (ii) to obtain the nuclear structure information. It is found that the capture rate is very sensitive to nuclear structure but not the polarization Psub(av) of the recoil nucleus in the case of muon capture by 12C. So, the study of recoil nuclear polarization Psub(av) is advocated to obtain unambiguous information about the coupling constants. Other experimental observables such as the asymmetry coefficient α and the longitudinal polarization Psub(L) of the recoil nucleus are investigated and it is shown that the various observables are interrelated in the case of muon capture by spin zero nucleus. The experimental arrangement of Louvain-Saclay collaboration has the nice feature of allowing the determination of both Psub(L) and Psub(av) but also exhibits the higher order tensor orientations of the recoil nucleus. These and other aspects have been discussed. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Nuclear muon capture offers a rich variety of observables. They can be used either to determine the fundamental coupling constants of the muon capture interaction or probes to investigate nuclear structure. In this paper, the several observables and their relative merits are discussed

AbstractAbstract
[en] The statistical model for fission is used to calculate the isotopic distribution of Rb and Cs in the fission of 238U induced by high-energy protons and reactor neutrons. The double-humped behaviour of the isotope yield curve as observed in high-energy proton-induced fission and the experimentally observed hump on the neutron-rich side in neutron-induced fission are semi-quantiatively reproduced. AbstractAbstract
[en] Microscopic Mottelson-Nilsson method extended for rotating light nuclei is used to obtain the yrast lines of 4042Ca and 46Ti up to very high spins. This method, apart from being economical, automatically accounts for the change of diffuseness with spin (which is most important for light nuclei). The calculated yrast lines for the above nuclei have been searched for high spin isomers, i.e., cold oblate configurations. They are also discussed in connection with the empirical fusion bands. Since they are found to lie below the fusion bands extracted from the measured fusion cross-sections, it is concluded that the yrast-line limitations cannot be responsible for the observed drop of fusion cross-sections below the reaction cross-sections at high energies in this mass region.
