AbstractAbstract
[en] The research done in the past revealed that non-thermal plasma has a great potential to be used in various fields including medicine and agriculture. However, more thorough investigation on possible genotoxic effects needs to be conducted. During plasma generation, reactive agents (such as reactive oxygen and nitrogen species) are created. These particles are known to cause oxidative DNA damage among other undesirable effects in the cell. This work is focused on non-thermal plasma induced DNA breaks caused by various sources. (authors)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Non-thermal plasma has a great potential in many applications, such as medicine, food industry, agriculture and sterilization. However, before applying such treatment, it is crucial to understand plasma chemistry and how reactive species within affect DNA. During plasma generation, various reactive species are created. These reactive particles can cause damage to cell structures and genetic material. As in some cases the genotoxic effects are desirable and in others are not, it is necessary to understand the molecular mechanisms behind them. (authors)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Nowadays, the pathogen resistance to available medication is getting a serious problem. Attention is paid not only to the searching for alternative bacterial treatments but also to yeast infections treatment. Currently, available yeast treatments are often insufficient or even cause damage to human cells. One of the promising alternative treatments is non-thermal plasma. Plasma demonstrates an antimicrobial effect under optimal treatment conditions without causing lethal damage to human cells. In this study, we focused on finding proper treatment conditions for yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe and Candida parapsilosis in which a decrease in the survival rate would be observed. Three different working gases, which plasma was generated from, were tested. According to our results, the most visible antifungal plasma effect was observed after the ambient air plasma treatment.
