AbstractAbstract
[en] A new and more precise measurement of the magnetic moment of the Σ- hyperon is reported. The result of (-1.48 +- 0.37)μ/sub N/ is in agreement with the sign given by simple SU(3) theory, but differs somewhat from the value of -0.9μ/sub N/ predicted by the theory with no mass breaking. 2 figures

AbstractAbstract
[en] A prototype muon polarimeter was built to study the feasibility of measuring the positive muon polarization in the decay K/sub L/ → μ+μ/sup /minus//. The system consisted of alternating layers of extruded aluminum gas proportional tubes and polarization-retaining absorber plates of either aluminum or marble. Longitudinally polarized positive muons from the Stopped Muon Channel at the Clinton P. Anderson Meson Physics Facility (LAMPF) were stopped in the absorber plates where they precessed in a field of 60 gauss. Decay times were recorded in 100 ns first-in-first-out memories for all wires hit during a 12.8 μs period centered about the muon stop trigger. The performance of the system was studied for different beam rates and absorber thicknesses. The value of imposing time and spacial cuts on track data to enhance the precession signal was also investigated. 7 refs., 4 figs., 1 tab

AbstractAbstract
[en] Antiprotons were brought to rest in targets of gaseous H2 and gaseous He at temperatures of 30 K and also in a target of liquid H2. High-resolution x-ray detectors were used to measure the energies of x rays from p-bar-He and to search for x rays from p-bar-H. The p-bar-He data are compared with similar measurements at different densities and with the theoretical predictions of Landua and Klempt. The p-bar-H data provide upper limits for the yields of nP→1S x rays in liquid and gaseous hydrogen

AbstractAbstract
[en] The magnetic moment of the Σ- hyperon has been obtained from measurements of fine-structure splittings of x-ray transitions in Σ- exotic atoms. The use of targets consisting of sheets of Pb or W immersed in liquid hydrogen, and of a tagging technique utilizing the π+ emitted in the reaction K-p→Σ-π+, resulted in improved x-ray signal-to-noise ratio by a factor of 15 over that in previous experiments. The present result is μ(Σ-) = (-1.111 +- 0.031 +- 0. 011)μ/sub N/. .AE
