AbstractAbstract
[en] This volume contains the proceedings of the National Conference on Synchrotron Radiation Instrumentation held at Gaithersburg, June 4-6, 1979. Status reports of the US synchrotron facilities are given. The recent developments of monochromator systems and related optical components such as mirrors and gratings, detector systems and applications of synchrotron radiation are presented. For further information see hints under relevant topics. (FKS)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Recent triply-differential photoelectron spectroscopy experiments designed for the study of correlation effects in atoms and molecules are described. Final-state symmetry of the n=2 state of helium has been determined. The non-Franck-Condon behavior of vibrational branching ratios and large variations of the angular asymmetry parameter has been observed for shape resonances and autoionizing resonances in CO and other molecules. Recent observations of the photoionization of excited sodium atoms are also described

AbstractAbstract
[en] Measurements of the K X-ray absorption and emission edges of Li are reported. They were made with the same spectrometer at the NBS storage ring and serve to establish a 0.1 eV separation between the edges with no possibility of instrument calibration error. These results are compared with recent theories of Almbladh and Mahan describing the effects of incomplete phonon relaxation about the core hole. It is concluded that these theories give a satisfactory explanation of the data

AbstractAbstract
[en] A variable wavelength angle resolving photoelectron spectrometer has been used to study the effects of autoionization and shape resonances upon molecular photoionization. Such resonance phenomena produce non-Franck-Condon effects in the vibrational intensity distributions and significant variations in the asymmetry parameters. Results are presented for C2N2 and CO2. Constant Photoelectron Energy (CPE) spectroscopy has been performed on C2H2 and spectra are shown at four kinetic energies. The information concerning energy absorption in molecules gained from these studies is discussed

AbstractAbstract
[en] This paper deals with inner-shell optical photon excitations in atomic gases. Special emphasis is given to electron correlations. Because these interactions are largest at photon energies <= 200 eV the scope of the paper will be limited to this part of the spectrum. The first section of the paper deals with excitations to discrete states that decay by an Auger or an autoionization process, and the next section explores the role exchange and correlation play in the contiuuum photoionization cross section of gaseous systems.
