Reasons for changes include operational experience, increased safety requirements, advancing design and manufacturing technology. [en] The optimisation and substantiation of welder spacer platens for Heysham II and Torness AGR boilers are discussed. Aspects described include the analysis of the sustained and cyclic thermal loading using integrated overall structural and subcomponent models, data manipulation and assessment criteria, substantiation against aerodynamically induced vibration. Aspects of the mechanical test programme in support of the work are also described. (author)

[en] Flow induced vibration has caused damage in some boilers for nuclear power stations. This paper describes the steps taken to ensure that the boiler design for Heysham 2 and Torness suffered no such problems. (author)
