AbstractAbstract
[en] Here I summarize various human and scientific aspects of Manuel Aguilar's career on the occasion of his 60th birthday. Manuel Aguilar is one of the pioneers of the development of Experimental High Energy Physics in Spain. His role as leader of one of the largest Spanish groups is recognized,; many of his contributions to the progress of this area of research in Spain are recalled by the author, who shared part of the route with him. AbstractAbstract
[en] The organization of the research in nuclear and particle physics in Spain is presented. A review of the size of the community, the present spanish groups and the experiments in which they are involved is given. the importance of the CERN installations will be emphasized by reviewing the activities as well as the strong implication of the spanish larger groups in the LHC project. A growing interest in astroparticle physics and neutrino physics is emerging, with a total of 7 experiments with spanish participation. The two laboratories, hosting astroparticle physics experiments, that have their sites in Spain, will be briefly described: Canfranc-an underground facility-and El roque de los muchachos-the canary islands telescope observatory. A final remark on funding will also be given. (Author)

[en] The IRRS follow-up mission to the Nuclear Safety Council. From January 25th to February 1st last the CSN headquarters hosted a follow-up to the IAEA Integrated Regulatory Review Service (IRRS) mission carried out in January 2008. The objective of this follow-up has been to check the extent to which the suggestions and recommendations made by the original IRRS mission have been adopted by the audited regulator and, as a result, to verify its degree of adherence to the strictest international standards. AbstractAbstract
[en] A new Process Analytical Technology (PAT) has been developed and tested for on-line process monitoring of a vacuum freeze-drying process. The sensor uses an infrared camera to obtain thermal images of the ongoing process and multivariate image analysis (MIA) to extract the information after automatic detection and segmentation of the region corresponding to the product in every vial. A reference model was built, using the information of six batches, and different kind of anomalous events, involving either single vials in the batch or the whole batch, were simulated to test the capacity of the MIA-based monitoring system to promptly identify them. AbstractAbstract
[en] 3σK-π separation at 1 GeV/c via time-of-flight (TOF) scintillation counters in the anticipated τcF geometry requires ∼ 120 ps time resolution. A prototype counter using a bundle of scintillating fibers 6.15 m long and 5 cm x 5 cm in cross section has been studied. The arrival time of cosmic rays passing 3 m from a photomultiplier has been measured with an observed resolution σ=237 ps thus indicating that two layers of counters each looked at by photomultipliers at both ends can provide the needed time resolution. A new particle ID technique called Cerenkov Correlated Timing which may be important for a τcF is briefly described. (author). 4 refs., 17 figs., 2 tabs

AbstractAbstract
[en] Catalonia is located in the north-east corner of Spain, on the Mediterranean coast and bordering with France in the north. It is one of the most industrialized and developed regions of Spain, with a per capita income of 10879 ECU per year (1989), 21.9% higher than the Spanish average. It contributes to 20.3% of the Spanish GDP. Primary energy consumption was 16.5 M toe in 1989, covered by the following sources: 3.5% coal, 51.8% oil, 9.4% natural gas, 3.6% hydro, 30.8% nuclear, 0.1% electrical import/export balance and 0.8% waste residuals. Oil dependence is distorted by the existence of a major petrochemical industry that uses more than 2.6 Mtoe of oil derivatives for non-energy purposes. Final energy demand in 1989 was 8.8 Mtoe, 40.9% for industry, 36.9% for transportation and 22.3% for the domestic and services sector. In the 60's, Catalonia's socio-economic development was accompanied by a spectacular increase in the demand for primary energy: from slightly above 2.5 million toe in 1960 to 5.6 Mtoe ten years later. If this decade can be characterized by a steady increase in the total value of consumption, the 70's also constitute years of major changes in the field of energy on an international scale (the oil crisis) and in politics in the Spanish State. 6 refs., 3 figs., 6 tabs

AbstractAbstract
[en] 1,2,4,6-Tetraphenylpyridinium (TPP+) as the acetate or perchlorate was used as a counter ion in the spectrophotometric determination of Nb(V) by extraction into toluene of the anionic Nb(V) -thiocyanate complex from 4 to 6 M hydrochloric acid. The molar absorptivity of the ion-association complex, whose composition was shown to be NbOCl(SCN)3-.TPP+, was 2.82 x 104 l mol-1cm-1 at 395 nm. Beer's law was obeyed over the range 0.1 to 2.5 μg ml-1 of Nb(V). The method was applied to the determination of niobium in standard steels and ores with good precision and accuracy. 1-(4'-Nitrophenyl)-2,4,6-triphenylpyridinium (nitro-TPP+) perchlorate was also synthesised and used in the spectrophotometric determination of Nb(V), but did not show advantages over TPP+. The fluorescence of TPP+ and Nb(V)-SCN--TPP+ solutions in toluene also disappeared when nitro-TPP+ was used, owing to the paramagnetic effect of the NO2 group. (author)
