[en] Six steel melts with silicocerium, lanthanum, neodymium and samarium additions were analyzed by irradiation over 40 hours using the WWR-S-Prague nuclear reactor. Spectra were measured with a Ge(Li) detector 18 cm³ in volume manufactured by UJV Rez, connected to a 400-channel analyzer. It was found that the cerium residue should not exceed 0.03%. The effect, formation and classification of inclusions in steel are discussed. (M.K.)

[en] The paper presents the results of neutron activation analysis (NAA) analysis of 43 samples of archaeological glass (Bronze Age to Roman period) found in Bohemia. A detailed description of the method used is given. The applicability of this type of analysis to prehistoric glass from the technical point of view and the validity of its results for historical studies is tested. In general, the method succeeded in distinguishing major clusters of glass, as recognized by means of prehistoric studies, though without showing more intensively the expected differences within these clusters. [en] Experimental conditions are described, especially the equipment and instrumentation of the department of nuclear spectroscopy, irradiation procedures using the Institute's reactor and the U-120 cyclotron, also the preparation, irradiation (usually 3 mins) and measurement of samples (usually up to 10 mins). The representative character of the samples, contamination checks and sample packing are discussed. The use is described of the Hewlett-Packard 2116B computer, a list is given of the programmes used, diagrams are presented as are examples of the individual programmes used and their printed output. A detailed list is given of the materials which have been analysed so far (biotite, regolith, magnesite, etc.), including the actually detected element content. Detection limits found are given and the possible uses are discussed of the nondestructive determination of 58 elements in long and short-term activation. (M.K.)
