AbstractAbstract
[en] We have searched for heavy charged and neutral vector bosons via the decays W' → ev, W' → μv, Z' → μμ in p bar p collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV, using data taken with the collider Detector at Fermilab. The nonobservation of these processes leads to a lower limit (95% confidence level) of 520 GeV/c2 on the mass of the W' and of 412 GeV/C2 on the mass of the Z', assuming standard model coupling to fermions. 12 refs., 6 figs., 1 tab

AbstractAbstract
[en] Diffraction dissociation of both the beam and the target particles is studied in 147 GeV/c π/sup +/p interactions in the Fermilab 30 inch bubble chamber using the hybrid spectrometer system. Results based on a study of 25,000 events are presented and compared to the results of a similar study done on 147 GeV/c π/sup -/p interactions

AbstractAbstract
[en] We present results from the barrel depleted uranium/TMP calorimeter modules constructed by the UA1 Collaboration. Electromagnetic and hadronic energy resolutions have been measured using electron and pion beams with momenta in the range 7 to 70 GeV/c. Results on the energy linearity and the spatial uniformity of response are reported. The electromagnetic shower position resolution has been measured as a function of energy using a fine grained position detector placed at a depth of ∝3.5 X0. The noise arising both from the electronics chain and from the uranium radioactivity is compared with 70 GeV/c muon signals. The ratio of the electron to pion response has been measured both as a function of the energy and of the electric field. The high lateral and longitudinal granularity of the calorimeter and the presence of a position detector have been used to determine the electron-pion separation as a function of energy. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] We present a measurement of the inclusive jet cross section in bar pp collisions at √s =1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron using the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Good agreement is seen with the predictions of recent next-to-leading-order [O(αs3)] QCD predictions. The dependence of the cross section on clustering cone size is reported for the first time. An improved limit on Λc, a term characterizing possible quark substructure, is set at 1.4 TeV (95% C.L.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] We have searched for the production of a neutral gauge boson (Z') with mass above 100 GeV/c2 in bar pp collisions with the Collider Detector at fermilab. We present a 95% confidence level (C.L.) limit on the Z'→μ+μ- production cross section. We combine the Z' limit with that from our previous dielectron search; the combined result sets a limit of MZ'>412 GeV/c2 95% C.L., assuming standard-model coupling strengths. In addition, the absence of any evidence for an effective muon-quark contact interaction is used to set a lower limit of 1.6 TeV (95% C.L.) on an associated muon-quark compositeness scale

[en] We report a measurement of the proton-antiproton total cross section σT at c.m.s. energies √s =546 and 1800 GeV. Using the luminosity-independent method, we find σT=61.26±0.93 mb at √s =546 GeV and 80.03±2.24 mb at √s =1800 GeV. In this energy range, the ratio σel/σT increases from 0.210±0.002 to 0.246±0.004

AbstractAbstract
[en] The production and event topology of three-jet events produced in p bar p collisions at √s =1.8 TeV have been studied with the Collider Detector at Fermilab at the Tevatron Collider. The distributions of the three-jet angular variables (ψ* and cosθ*) and of the variables describing the energy sharing between jets (x3 and x4) are found to agree well with tree-level QCD calculations. These distributions are predicted to have different shapes for different initial-state subprocesses (quark-antiquark, quark-gluon, and gluon-gluon). The data are consistent with the small expected contribution from quark-antiquark initial states, in agreement with theoretical expectations

AbstractAbstract
[en] We have analyzed events with jets and large missing transverse energy produced in bar pp colisions at √s =1.8 TeV. The observed event rate is consistent with standard model predictions. In a version of the supersymmetry (SUSY) model with a light photino (mγ<15 GeV/c2) and no cascade decays, we exclude at the 90% confidence level the existence of squarks and gluinos with masses less than 126 and 141 GeV/c2, respectively. The mass limits are lower with other choices of the SUSY parameters. An example is presented

AbstractAbstract
[en] We report the full reconstruction of χc mesons through the decay chain χc→J/ψ γ, J/ψ→μ+μ-, using data obtained at the Collider Detector at Fermilab in 2.6±0.2 pb-1 of bar pp collisions at √s =1.8 TeV. This exclusive χc sample is used to measure the χc-meson production cross section times branching fractions. We obtain σxB=3.2±0.4(stat)-1.1+1.2(syst) nb for χc mesons decaying to J/ψ with pT>6.0 GeV/c and pseudorapidity |η|<0.5. From this and the inclusive J/ψ cross section we calculate the inclusive b-quark cross section to be 12.0±4.5 μb for pTb>8.5 GeV/c and |yb|<1
