AbstractAbstract
[en] The authors have constructed and installed a large-area, high-efficiency neutron detector at the NSCL. The motivation behind the detector's design was provided by their desire to improve a previous experiment, where they measured the soft-dipole-resonance parameters and ground state n-n correlations in 11Li, and to perform similar experiments on other neutron-rich halo nuclei. The detector consists of two planes of liquid scintillator, each 4 square meters in area; it is position sensitive and is capable of neutron-γ-ray discrimination. A general overview of the detector's design and measurements of its performance in test experiments will be presented

AbstractAbstract
[en] Two 2m x 2m neutron open-quotes wallsclose quotes are being built for experiments with two neutrons in the final state. Each wall consists of 25 rectangular cells filled with NE213 liquid scintillator. The neutron detection system is formed by setting one wall some distance behind the other one. The close-packed feature makes cross-talk an inevitable contributor to distortion of measurements with this system. Since almost all the detection efficiency comes from n-p scattering for this energy range, En ≤ 30 MeV, the simple two-body kinematics can be used as the basis for identifying cross-talk events. A Monte-Carlo code was developed to simulate the detection process. The authors found that most cross-talk events could be distinguished from real two-neutron events. A test experiment for comparison with the code will be performed by using the 7Li(p,n)7Be reaction at Ep ∼ 30 MeV. With this reaction all two-detector coincidences are cross-talk events

AbstractAbstract
[en] Various charge exchange reactions [(p,n), (n,p), (3He,t) and (6Li,6He)] in different experiments - with special emphasis on Zr experiment - are analyzed in order to learn if they confirm the existence of giant Gamow-Teller (spin-flip) transition. (P.L.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] In a Coulomb dissociation of 11Li the complete kinematics were measured. From the electric dipole excitation spectrum and from an observed systematic excess of 9Li velocity above neutron velocity, it is concluded the proposed soft dipole mode is not present. The 9Li and neutron momentum distributions in the 11Li rest frame are fitted by a phase space model rather than a dineutron model
