AbstractAbstract
[en] Exposure of aqueous ethylene glycol solutions of NO-ferri-horseradish peroxidase (HRP) to 60Co γ-rays at 77 K results in electron addition to the Fe(III)-NO centers. The comparison of the electronic structure of the electron adduct with that of NO-ferro-HRP formed in liquid solution indicates two different Fe(II)-NO species, one linear with possibly weak histidine interaction and the other bent with a strong histidine interaction, respectively. The reaction path for the transition from the low-temperature species to the NO-ferro-HRP is proposed as due to the temperature-dependent change of interaction between the heme and the globin. AbstractAbstract
[en] The catalytic and physical properties of irradiated beef liver catalase have been studied. Modification of the enzyme by γ-rays brings about its reducibility by dithionite. The decrease of the catalytic activity is found to correspond to the decrease in the content of nonreducible catalase. Microaggregates of catalase molecules induced by irradiation have been fractionated. The results lead to the conclusion that aggregates are composed of active and modified catalase monomers. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The one-electron reduction of pentacyanonitrosylferrate(II) ion, Fe(CN)5NO2-, by electrons generated upon γ-radiolysis of frozen glassy solutions has been studied using optical absorption and EPR spectroscopies. The electrons react with Fe(CN)5NO2- at 77 deg K to yield Fe(CN)5NO3-. At higher temperatures a part of Fe(CN)5NO3- reacts with radicals formed upon radiolysis to yield an alkylonitroso complex Fe(CN)5N(O)R3-. Fe(CN)5NO3- undergoes protonation-dependent decay near the melting point of the solution to form Fe(CN)4NO2-. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The purpose of these studies was to assess the effect of gamma radiation from Co60 in the interval of sterilizing doses up to 3.5 Mrad on the more important physicochemical and technological characteristics of gelatin. The doses were chosen depending on their ability to inactivate the contaminating microflora. Doses above 3.5 Mrad were also used, to study changes in physicochemical properties of irradiated gelatin. The studies warrant the conclusion that, in view of its protein nature, the sterilization of gelatin by radiation has several advantages over the classical methods and produces the desired effect without altering the relevant physicochemical properties. AbstractAbstract
[en] The whole-cell glucose isomerase was immobilized by the method of block polymerization of acrylamide initiated by 60Co irradiation. Some properties of immobilized glucose isomerase were studied under various reaction conditions, in respect of its use as industrial catalyst. It was established that Co2+ ions did not increase stability of the immobilized enzyme at pH above 8.0. The half-life on the immobilized glucose isomerase was found to be 24 days at 600C. (orig.)

(orig.)Primary Subject

AbstractAbstract
[en] The codeposition of C60 vapor with excess argon and concurrent argon resonance radiation has produced strong new absorptions at 973 and 1068 nm in solid argon at 11 ± 1 K. A similar experiment with CCl4, added to serve as an electron trap, reduced the yield of the 1068 nm band with little effect on the 973 nm absorption. The 973 nm band is assigned to C60+ produced by photoionization and the 1068 nm band to C60- formed by electron capture. These identifications are in excellent agreement with glassy matrix, solution and photoelectron spectra. Preliminary magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectra of the 973 nm C60+ band have also been measured. Both the 1068 and 973 nm bands show a characteristic triplet structure which is tentatively attributed to the combined effects of spin-orbit and Jahn-Teller coupling
