AbstractAbstract
[en] The current experimental status of measurements of nucleon structure functions in deep inelastic lepton scattering is presented. Recent BCDMS and SLAC results provide a consistent data set for charged lepton scattering. New probes of parton distributions: direct photons, Drell Yan di-muon production, W, Z and heavy quark production are providing information on the gluon an antiquark distributions. The implications of these data on our understanding of the structure of the nucleon, and the structure of the nucleon in the nucleus are discussed. 26 refs., 9 figs

AbstractAbstract
[en] The role of hadron dynamics in the nucleus is illustrated to show the importance of nuclear medium effects in hadron interactions. The low lying hadron spectrum is considered to provide the natural collective variables for nuclear systems. Recent studies of nucleon-nucleon and delta-nucleon interactions are reviewed, with emphasis on the type of experimental phenomena which signal the importance of the many-body dynamics. 28 references

AbstractAbstract
[en] The summary of this presentation is: (1) the origin and structure of the sea remain critical themes in the physics of the nucleon and nucleus; (2) We need to push to higher x values and E906/SeaQuest is especially well suited for this. We start this summer and run for two years; (3) The other really key measurement is improved precision in the spin carried by the sea quarks and the spin-correlations in the sea - COMPASS, RHIC, J-PARC, JLAB 12 GeV.; and (4) This is difficult and may require the next generation of polarized Drell-Yan experiments. Whatever we measure, Tony Thomas will have thought of it first and helped stimulate the experiments.

AbstractAbstract
[en] The properties of the spin gap isomers in 52Fe, 53Fe, and 54Co were studied by observing prompt and delayed activity from the 14N + 40Ca and 16O + 40Ca reactions. A new isomeric state was identified in 52Fe at 6.82 +- .13 MeV excitation energy and was tentatively assigned the spin-parity 12+. The half-life of this isomer was measured to be 45.94 +- .60 seconds. A lower limit on the partial half-life for direct γ-ray de-excitation of the isomer was established to be 11500 seconds. The branching ratio for E6 decay of the 53Fe isomer was determined to be .56 +- .10 x .10-3. No evidence of beta decay of this isomer was observed. One previously unreported beta decay branch of the /sup 54m/Co decay was also observed. The halflives of the 54Co and 53Fe isomers were remeasured to be 85.2 +- 1.8 and 147 +- 3 seconds respectively. Shell model calculations demonstrated that the excitation energies of the high spin levels at each end of the shell are well reproduced by using experimental two-body matrix elements. Most of the differences in the spectra of particle-particle and hole-hole conjugate nuclei are reproduced by this change of two-body matrix elements. The (f7/2)/sup n/ calculations tended to underestimate the beta decay log ft values. Inclusion of p3/2 and f5/2 admixtures in the calculations gave qualitative agreement with experiment. The E4 transition rates in the f7/2 shell are observed to be enhanced at the beginning of the shell, and retarded at the end of the shell. The (fp) shell calculations tend to modify the results of the (f7/2)/sup n/ calculations of the E4 and E6 decay rates in the direction necessary to bring the theoretical values into agreement with experiment; however, sizable polarization charges are still required. It is speculated that collective contributions to the E4 effective charges are important in 44Sc, but not in 52Mn or 53Fe

AbstractAbstract
[en] The physics motivation and experimental apparatus of FNAL E665 are described. E665 is a new experiment to study the hadrons in coincidence with muons deep inelastically scattered from nuclei. One of the goals of the experiment is to examine nuclear medium effects not only on the baryon quark distributions (the EMC effect) but also on the process of hadronization in high energy collisions. 17 refs., 5 figs

[en] Data from pion inelastic scattering and charge-exchange experiments are discussed within the framework of a DWIA analysis. The properties of the pion-nucleon interaction transformed to the pion-nuclear system are used to infer new nuclear-structure information for both discrete states and giant resonances

AbstractAbstract
[en] Coincidence cross sections for (e, e'p) quasi-elastic scattering were measured at CEBAF with high statistical precision for C, Fe, and Au targets for 0.6 < Q2 < 3.3 GeV2. Missing energy and missing momentum distributions obtained from a preliminary analysis are in reasonable agreement with prior data from SLAC. The preliminary analysis are compared with a PWIA calculation to determine the nuclear transparency as a function of Q2 and A. A Rosenbluth analysis to extract the longitudinal and transverse cross sections from these data is anticipated
