AbstractAbstract
[en] Large transverse energy cross sections of 300 GeV/c pions and protons on hydrogen have been measured with a segmented calorimeter covering the central rapidity region -0.88 < y < 0.67 and 2π in azimuth. The selected events show large multiplicities and no jet like event structure. Processes more complicated than the scattering of two constituents appear to dominate these inelastic collisions. AbstractAbstract
[en] Interactions of 150 GeV pions and 300 GeV pions and protons on hydrogen which result in final states with large transverse energy in the central rapidity region -0.88 < y < 0.67 were studied with a calorimeter trigger. The dependence of the cross section on the azimuthal acceptance of the trigger, on the beam energy and on the incident particle type and the jet properties of the events were investigated. No dominant two jet structure was found. Nevertheless the parton spectrum in the colliding hadrons appears to be relevant for large transverse energy reactions. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] We describe a system of two groups of multiwire proportional chambers and its special purpose interface used in the Single Arm Spectrometer (SAS) facility at Fermilab. The first set measures the coordinates of the fast particle going into the spectrometer arm with a space resolution down to +- 0.5 mm. The second set, close to the target, measures the multiplicity and angular distributions of charged particles coming from the interaction. The chambers of this set have three sensitive planes with wires at 1200 in the same gas volume to measure three coordinates for each physical point, two readout channels per wire to minimize the inefficiency due to the very high flux and insensitive regions at the center of the chambers where they are crossed by the beam

AbstractAbstract
[en] Quark structure functions have been extracted from low-p/sub T/ inclusive hadron production data for the pion and kaon with use of the recombination model. n/sup π/=1.0 +- 0.1 and n/sup K/=2.5 +- 0.6 is obtained, where n is the leading (1-x) power of the nonstrange--valence-quark distribution. Both the pion and kaon nonstrange--sea-quark functions have napprox. =3.5

AbstractAbstract
[en] Measurements of inclusive cross sections at 100 GeV/c are presented for the double-charge-exchange reactions a+p → π-X with a = π, K, or p. The measurements covered a kinematic range in the Feynman x variable of 0.3 < or = x < or = 0.9 at transverse momenta of 0.3 and 0.5 GeV/c. A model summing the contributions from resonance production and from inclusive central-region π- production is used to fit the data and demonstrates the importance of resonance production via one-pion exchange for large values of the Feynman x

AbstractAbstract
[en] We have performed high-sensitivity search for massive long-lived particles produced at 2.5 mrad by 400-GeV/c protons on a beryllium target using time-of-flight, Cherenkov, and calorimetric techniques. A total of 1011 light particles (π-,K-,p-bar) was sampled at 70 KeV/c. The experiment places a limit of 1.1 x 10-37 cm2/(GeV/c)2 nucleon on the invariant cross section for the production of stable particles in the mass range of 4 to 10 GeV/c2

AbstractAbstract
[en] An experiment using the Fermilab single arm spectrometer (SAS) facility and an associated nonmagnetic vertex detector studied the reactions a+p→c+X where a and c were π+-, K+-, p, or p-bar. Extensive measurements were made at 100 and 175 GeV/c beam momenta with the outgoing hadrons detected in the SAS covering a kinematic range 0.12< x<1.0 and pT<1.25 GeV/c. Additional data covering a more restricted range in x were also gathered at 70 GeV/c incident momentum. In this high-statistics experiment, the identification of both the incoming and outgoing charged hadrons were made with a total of eight Cerenkov counters. New and extensive single-particle inclusive data for charged-particle production in low-pT hadronic fragmentation are presented. The average associated charged-particle multiplicity and pseudorapidity distributions are also given
