AbstractAbstract
[en] A group of physicists at TRIUMF have been meeting regularly to discuss options for involvement in experiments that relate closely to the physics that would be undertaken at the KAON Factory. At a meeting held to discuss possibilities for work at KEK in the light of the new facilities that are under construction or proposed as part of the JHP, the topics considered ranged from the ion source to kaon beams. They included measurements of kaon-nucleon elastic and inelastic scattering in the 1600 to 2000 MeV range; transport of polarized proton beams through synchrotrons; the development of laser pumped polarized ion sources and volume cusp H- sources; studies of the problems that high intensity beams will present for the maintenance of H- stripping foils; collaboration on radioactive beam facilities; production of hypernuclei; low energy kaon scattering; and new types of detectors

AbstractAbstract
[en] In order to ensure that the type of experimental facilities provided at the TRIUMF KAON Factory meet the needs of physicists, TRIUMF is seeking advice from the physics community by sponsoring a number of workshops. A list of desired facilities has been made. From this list it is learned that channels providing charged particles, K±'s (π±'s and polarized p's) at all the possible energies would be desirable. As well there will be a need for a neutral kaon beam, a neutrino beam, muon spin resonance beams and an area for extracted polarized proton studies. Some of these latter studies could be done using internal targets, so an area for such must also be included. Tasks still requiring input include definition the requirements for the polarized proton beam area, internal targets, neutrino facility, kaon spectrometers and/or detectors, production targets, and proton beams downstream of production targets

AbstractAbstract
[en] The report outlines major experimental facilities at the KAON Factory. For the purposes of the Project Definition Study (PDS), the facilities must be specified to sufficient accuracy so that a reasonable estimate of costs can be established. In addition, the impact of the production of these facilities on the Canadian industrial community needs to be evaluated. In order to achieve these goals a number of assumptions must be made regarding the types of facilities that will be required. The considerations to date of what the experimental facilities at KAON will look like have primarily concentrated on the secondary beams that will be produced using the full intensity (100 μ-amps) 30 GeV/c unpolarized proton beam. Several schemes for extracting low energy beams from a production target that will allow for the extraction of several other beams form the same target. Any experimental layout that places several production targets in the same proton beam must attempt to optimize particle production versus the transmission of the primary beam through the upstream targets. It has been decided that a layout with the largest number of ideal channels and the greatest flexibility be adopted. (N.K.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The OZI rule, derived primarily from quark based concepts, is violated in φ production on the proton. A number of theoretical approaches to this effect have been undertaken, both from quark and meson points of view. A detailed study of the OZI rule and its violation is proposed, in particular to the pt dependence and polarization parameters of this effect

AbstractAbstract
[en] The planned kaon factory at TRIUMF is described. This facility accelerates the 500-MeV proton beam to 30 GeV in a series of five rings. Six kaon beams with momenta from 0.40 to 20 GeV/c can be extracted. The research program at this facility is briefly described. (HSI)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Gamma rays from the reaction 114Cd(p,n)114In have been detected in Ge(Li)counters in singles, in n-γ coincidence and in γ-γ coincidence. Direct timing measurements were carried out on γ-rays of 287, 312, 504, 634 and 693keV. Angular distribution measurements restrict the spin of the 287keV state to J<=3. (Auth.)
