AbstractAbstract
[en] The causes are discussed of shortcomings which appear when ultrasonic testing methods and devices which have been developed for ferritic steels, are applied in testing austenitic and other coarse-grain materials. The shortcomings consist in that the spectrum of grain size of the materials causes great dispersion of the ultrasound pulse which passes through them and that the dendritic structure in welded joints of thick walled parts causes a strong directional dependence of the velocity of ultrasound propagation inside the weld. In tests of austenitic materials, ultrasound should be introduced into the material such that it will only pass through one material edge and the joint must be such that the divide between the weld and the base material is planar. The parameters are presented of ultrasonic probes developed for automated testing of welds on thick walled austenitic parts. (Z.M.). 4 refs

AbstractAbstract
[en] Pulser and live timer are alternate tools. Dead time effects can be expressed in terms of a pulse rate factor of the counting yield. The task of their correction should be shifted from the live timer of the ADC to a central timing unit. A new method is proposed, combining the advantages of the pulser and the live timer, whereby each selected and accepted event is adjoined to a clock time interval and each selected but not accepted event to a dead time interval. The length of each interval is determined by the arrival of the next selected event. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] For the first time a combination of B.E.T. gas adsorption method and neutron or photon activation analysis has been successfully applied to metal surfaces as well as to metal and ceramic powders (more than 50 cases). Increasing oxide film thickness was observed with increasing Al particle size. Speciation may be performed by the analysis of dehydratation. Even double-layers in the nanometer ranges may be specified. The method satisfactorily compares with TEM. (author) 10 refs.; 1 fig.; 6 tabs
