AbstractAbstract
[en] Reactions of natural zircon with Na2CO3 with mole ratios ranging from 1:1 to 1:2.6 were studied at 800 and 900 degC for periods up to 48 hours. The products of the reaction were Na2ZrO3, Na2SiO3 and Na2ZrSiO5. A reaction mechanism, valid within the range of temperature of this study, has been proposed on the basis of the relative proportions of the co-existing phases as a function of composition, temperature and time. The reaction was initiated with the formation of Na2ZrSiO5 which later reacted with any excess Na2CO3 present resulting in the formation of Na2ZrO3 and Na2SiO3. When treated with water, Na2ZrSiO5 remained unaffected while Na2ZrO3 was converted to amorphous hydrated zirconia. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Moessbauer effect studies on some natural magnetite ore samples from India are reported for the first time. Using the Moessbauer spectroscopy data, the magnetites of sedimentary origin are differentiated from those of igneous origin. The igneous magnetites are found to have a nearly stoichiometric composition. A titanium enrichment in these samples was also evidenced. The magnetites of sedimentary origin, however, have almost fully oxidized to haematite. (Auth.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Application of remote sensing and GIS for effective determination of the quantitative description of drainage basin geometry for watershed management prioritization forms the theme of this paper. In the present study, each of the eight sub watersheds of Racherla watershed of Prakasam (District) Andhra Pradesh, have been studied in terms of the morphometric parameters -stream length, bifurcation ratio, length ratio, drainage density, stream frequency, texture ratio, form factor area, perimeter, circularity ratio, elongation ratio and sediment yield index. The prioritization of the eight sub watersheds is carried out considering morphometry and sediment yield index. Using IRS IC satellite imagery, a computerized database is created availing ARC / INFO software. The initial drainage map prepared from the survey of India toposheets was later unified with satellite imagery. The prioritization of sub sheds based on morphometry compared with sediment yield prioritization and found nearly same for the study area. The information obtained from all the thematic map is integrated and action plan is suggested for land and water resources development on a sustainable basis. (author)
