AbstractAbstract
[en] Rooting patterns of five flue-cured varieties of tobacco were studied by the 32P wick feeding technique. Among the varieties studied, CTRI-special was found to have deep and spreading type of rooting system. Delcrest was of shallow and spreading type; Dhanadayi was of deep rooting type whereas Kanakaprabha and HR 65-35 were shallow rooting varieties. The yield of these varieties had some relation to their rooting patterns. (auth.)

[en] Root distribution of flue-cured tobacco (variety : Kanakaprabha) in clayey and loamy sand soils was studied with the help of 32P wick feeding technique. About 90 percent of the roots of tobacco plant in black soil on 40th day and in light soil on 60th day are present in a soil core of diameter 40 cm and depth 30 cm. On the 90th day of growth stage, no significant differences were observed in the root distribution of tobacco between the two types of soil. About 85 percent of the roots were present in a soil core of diameter 40 cm and depth 30 cm on 90th day in both the soils. (author)

[en] Wick feeding and leaf smearing methods have been compared for their relative efficiencies for root distribution studies with tobacco plant. The applied radioactivity gets equilibrated within 3 days in the tobacco plant. Root sections of the plants fed through the wick contained higher quantity for the radioactivity over those of the leaf smeared ones. Because of the case of application and better translocation of applied radioactivity the wick-feeding method appears to have good utility for root distribution studies with hard stemmed plants.
