AbstractAbstract
[en] It is shown that magnetic colloids could increase the coupling of a liquid crystal to a week magnetic field. Magnetic Freedericksz transition in a planarly oriented nematic liquid crystal doped with spherical ferromagnetic nanoparticles is considered theoretically. It is shown that even spherical nanoparticles could decrease a threshold of this transition because they strongly increase the magnetic field in the medium. This phenomenon indicates the possibility to use the considered system in magneto-optical displays

AbstractAbstract
[en] A phenomenological theory of electric Freedericksz transition in planar-oriented nematic liquid crystals doped with spherical ferroelectric nanoparticles is considered. It is shown that even spherical nanoparticles can critically reduce the threshold of Freedericksz transition, due to their ability to strongly increase the electric field in the medium. At higher values of polarization and concentration of nanoparticles a Freedericksz transition without threshold can occur. In this case only an insignificant electric field needs for orienting the nanoparticles

AbstractAbstract
[en] A possibility of exciting steady convective motions in isotropic and anisotropic liquids under the action of a force produced by the radiation pressure of an acoustic wave with a spatially periodic transverse intensity distribution is considered theoretically and experimentally. Cells both with two rigid boundaries and with one free surface are studied. The fluxes lead to reorientation of the director of liquid crystal in the case of anisotropic liquid. As a result, it acquires a periodic distribution in the transverse plane. The phenomenon can be utilized for the imaging of acoustic fields with micro watt power

AbstractAbstract
[en] The problem of forced convection in the cell of nanoparticles doped nematic liquid crystal with both boundaries being free, plane and isotherm is discussed. These boundary conditions (offered by Rayleigh) allow to get simple and exact solution for boundary-value problem, from which its most important peculiarities can be clearly seen. Particularly, there appears a possibility to induce convection without reorientation of liquid crystal director. It was shown that nanoparticles could have significant influence on the convection

AbstractAbstract
[en] Reorientation of liquid crystal (LC) director due to the hydrodynamic motions in a Hele-Shaw cell is studied theoretically. These motions arise when liquid crystal is pushed by viscous stress of a less viscous fluid (e.g., air). It is obtained the value of 1 rad for the probe light wave phase change at the liquid crystal film thickness of 100 μm and pressure gradient of dp/dx = 10-5 Pa/m in the air

AbstractAbstract
[en] Laser-induced nonlinear optical effects in BAAB-1005 type nematic liquid crystals have been investigated experimentally. It is shown that the orientational nonlinear effects in the field of single-mode laser beam emerge intensely after preliminary exposure of the liquid crystal with a visible radiation with certain frequency. These effects are conditioned by trans-cis transition of molecules of BAAB 1005 type azobenzene liquid crystal, at absorption of radiation with certain frequency. Qualitative explanation of experimental results is based on simultaneous action of several mechanisms, including thermomechanical mechanism

AbstractAbstract
[en] General approach for the study of mechanical deformation properties of solid nematic, which are the macroscopic homogeneous elastic media possessed of the nematic liquid crystal rotational symmetry is proposed. The stress tensor, the Young modulus and Poisson ratio for parallel and perpendicular homogeneous orientations of nematic molecules in the respect to the external forces action axis are obtained by the variation of the mechanical deformation free energy, containing five independent terms. It is shown that these constants have anisotropic characters. It is proposed 5 experiments for the direct measuring 5 coefficients in the free energy expression

AbstractAbstract
[en] The problem of regular convection appearance in the layer of nanofluid with one free surface at the absorption of the spatially periodic light wave in the layer plane due to the temperature dependence of surface tension coefficient is considered. Profiles of velocity and temperature in the medium volume are calculated. It is shown that the response of system on the light wave impact has maximum, for the same other conditions, when period of interference pattern close to the twice layer thickness

AbstractAbstract
[en] Laser-induced hydrodynamic (LIH) motions in nematic liquid crystal (NLC) which is an initially oriented hybrid have been studied theoretically. For the direction when the flow velocity is directed out of the flexible ribbon's curvature, it brings an increase of the curvature. But when the velocity has the opposite direction, we have two different cases depending on the surface anchoring energies. When there is a strong boundary condition (anchoring energy > 10–3 erg/cm2) on the planar oriented wall, and there is a weak boundary condition (anchoring energy > 10–3 erg/cm2) on the homeotropic oriented wall, the molecules of a liquid crystal (LC) take the direction of the flow. Flexible ribbon’s curvature is reversed when is given a weak boundary condition on the planar oriented wall and on the homeotropic oriented wall is given strong boundary condition
