AbstractAbstract
[en] Alloy X-750 condition HTH stress corrosion crack growth rate (SCCGR) tests have been conducted at 360 C (680 F) with 50 cc/kg hydrogen as a function of coolant pH. Results indicate no appreciable influence of pH on crack growth in the pH (at 360 C) range of ∼ 6.2 to 8.7, consistent with previous alloy 600 findings. These intermediate pH results suggest that pH is not a key variable which must be accounted for when modeling pressurized water reactor (PWR) primary water SCC. In this study, however, a nearly three fold reduction in X-750 crack growth rate was observed in reduced pH environments (pH 3.8 through HCl addition and pH 4-5.3 through H2SO4 addition). Crack growth rates did not directly correlate with corrosion film thickness. In fact, 10x thicker corrosion films were observed in the reduced pH environments

AbstractAbstract
[en] The sampling of plants and animals is part of environmental base line studies initiated by the Mineral Resources Administration for Greenland in relation to plans for exploration and exploitation of a niobium occurence. Samples have been collected in areas expected to be influenced by mining activities and in reference areas. The collected species of plants include northern willow, bellard's kobresia, lichen (Cetraria nivalis), and others. Samples of animals include musk oxen, reindeer, alpine hare, ptarmigan, fox, and arctic char. However, 60 samples have been analyzed for polonium-210 and lead-210. The highest concentrations were found in lichen and the lowest in muscle tissue. In many samples systematic differences between the concentrations of the two isotopes were observed indicating that polonium-210 should continue to be part of the base line study program and the monitoring program if mining is started. The observed concentrations pose no health problem. 30 kg bulk samples of the best pyrochlore ore and the rock c. 10 m on both sides of the mineralization (the side rock) were analyzed for niobium, tantalum, some trace elements, and natural radioactive isotopes. The ore sample has concentrations of 33.17% niobium, 0.4% tantalum, 0.77% uranium, and more than 0.37% rare earth elements. The concentrations of all other analyzed elements are low. The ore has very well defined boundaries and there is a very low concentration of radioactive elements in the side rock. The naturally occurring concentrations of radon have been measured at stations on top of the mineralization, within the carbonatite complex and outside the complex. The concentrations generally are very low. However, the concentrations in the complex are significantly higher than outside the complex. This reflects an elevated uranium concentration of the carbonatite complex rocks. (AB)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Long term results, obtained in the treatment of 308 patients with laryngeal carcinoma are analysed with respect to local recurrence and complications. In this analysis the Cell Population Kinetic model, proposed by COHEN (1971) is used. The model for squamous cell carcinoma is found to be useful and in close agreement with observations of local recurrence, although a slight modification may be justified from the present data. No special model exists for late edema, but the model for late effects in the vascular stroma seems to be useful in this respect. Based on the model, a working hypothesis has been proposed, by which it is possible to predict the frequency of local recurrence and late edema. An optimum treatment schedule is calculated and converted to a split-course technique. (Auth.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The report documents an evaluation of the state-of-the-art capabilities of nuclear density gauges to monitor the density of asphalt concrete. In particular, providing immediate information on compaction by the use of roller-mounted gauges and measuring the densities of thin layers were addressed. The study included three phases: literature search, laboratory tests, and field trials. The first phase included a review of current literature on the theory and operating characteristics of commercially available equipment and a review of State highway agency procedures and specifications for monitoring asphalt concrete density. The second phase included a series of laboratory tests to verify factory calibrations and to determine the depth sensitivity, chemical composition errors, and thin-lift capabilities of the various gauges under laboratory conditions. The third phase consisted of five sets of field trials. The data show that, within limitations, static nuclear gauges can be used for acceptance testing of thin-lifts, but only when all parameters affecting the measurements are precisely known. The dynamic gauges can be effectively used to monitor relative density growth

AbstractAbstract
[en] A procedure is described by which wedge filters for a 6 MeV linear accelerator are easily constructed and the resulting dose distribution calculated. Calculations and measurements compare very well. Measurements are made with an automatic isodose plotter (Scanditronix) and with Baldwin Farmer substandard. (auth.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) will provide unprecedented instantaneous and integrated luminosities. The CMS electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) will face a challenging environment at the HL-LHC: higher event pileup, higher radiation levels for the crystals and photo-detectors, and a higher rate of anomalous signals from the Avalanche Photodiodes (APDs) used for the light readout in the ECAL Barrel. A redesign of the ECAL electronics (including an increase in trigger rate and latency) is planned in order to mitigate these challenges and to maintain the excellent physics performance of the detector

AbstractAbstract
[en] Autopsy in patients with pulmonary small cell carcinoma frequently reveals metastases to the adrenal glands. In order to test the hypothesis that CT scanning might demonstrate such metastases at the time of clinical diagnosis of the pulmonary disease, the results of adrenal CT in 15 patients were correlated to adrenocortical function tests. No statistically significant relationship was found. It is concluded that no reliable non-invasive method exists to diagnose adrenal metastases in patients with pulmonary small cell carcinoma. AbstractAbstract
[en] We used the end-tidal concentration of xenon-133 (air curve) to estimate the profile of its arterial concentration in calculating cerebral blood flow. We examined the effects of pulmonary disease and artificial ventilation on the air curve and the calculated cerebral blood flow. We studied the relation between arterial and end-tidal xenon activities in 19 subjects, of whom 15 had pulmonary dysfunction. The t 1/2 of the declining phases of the arterial and air curves were used to express their shapes. The mean +/- SD reference t 1/2 from 15 normal volunteers was 26.8 +/- 8.4 seconds. The mean +/- SD t 1/2 s of the air and arterial curves from the 15 patients with pulmonary dysfunction were 10.4 +/- 2.9 and 33.8 +/- 10.9 seconds. The degree of pulmonary dysfunction (expressed as the pulmonary shunt percentage) correlated with distortion of the air curve. Substituting the arterial for the air curve, mean calculated cerebral blood flow (as the initial slope index) increased from 40 to 61 for the 12 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The degree of underestimation of cerebral blood flow using the air curve correlated with the pulmonary shunt percentage. Our work confirms the problems of estimating cerebral blood flow in subjects with pulmonary dysfunction

AbstractAbstract
[en] A series of 359 patients with carcinoma of the larynx was found to be very close to being representative of the northern part of Jutland, Denmark (north of Kongeaen). No unequivocal change in the disease as regards sex, age, histology, symptoms and signs, and stage of disease could be observed during the period 1963 to 1972. A not statistically significant improvement in the corrected mortality appeared. The level of complications after irradiation and secondary surgery was found to be low. A statistically significant, better prognosis was found for females than for males in the glottic group. (Auth.)
