AbstractAbstract
[en] The authors devised a semiautomatic technique for using the soft-tissue contrast in MR images to identify the surfaces of tissues in a volume of image data. The two-stage segmentation scheme includes classification of individual pixels based on their intensities in T1- and T2-weighted images as well as a region-growing step and subsequent reassignment of small regions depending on the evaluation of adjacent tissues

AbstractAbstract
[en] A computer-aided tissue characterization scheme is used to separate abnormal from normal tissues on the basis of their intensities on T1- and T2-weighted images. The intensity of an abnormal tissue on a T1-weighted image is then made to oscillate so that the amplitude (or frequency) of oscillation is directly proportional to the difference between the lesion's intensity and the intensities of normal tissues. The result is a ''movie'' in which the abnormal tissue churns or oscillates on the screen, drawing the attention because of the eye's sensitivity to motion

AbstractAbstract
[en] MR, CT, and PET studies depict complementary aspects of brain anatomy and function. The authors' own image-processing software and a Pixar image computer were used to create three-dimensional models of brain soft tissues from MR images, of the skull and calcifications from CT scans, and of brain metabolism from PET images. An image correlation program, based on surface fitting, was used for retrospective registration and merging of these three-dimensional models. The results are demonstrated in a video clip showing how the operator may rotate and perform electronic surgery on the integrated, multimodality three-dimensional model of each patient's brain

AbstractAbstract
[en] The exchange of hydrogen isotopes H and D between different binding states in concrete has been investigated experimentally with the aid of nuclear magnetic resonance (proton NMR) measurements. The distinction between chemically bound and physically adsorbed water molecules has been possible. The diffusion coefficient measured by NMR was used for detecting the D2O/H2O mixture. It could be shown that the extraction of chemically bound D2O by free H2O in concrete occurs at once at the moment of contact, but that there are also exchange processes with large time constants

AbstractAbstract
[en] The Swiss public is still involved in main decisions which may be concern them. The nuclear industry knows a lot about the difficulties of advancing with projects such as repository or new plants. The temptation is very high to change the existing law to simplify the procedure of authorization. But this would be a very bad way to circumvent the distrust of public against nuclear projects. Everywhere today politicians are promoting the empowerment of responsible citizens: in health care, consumers decision and so on. In the domain of nuclear concerns this empowerment is extremely important: especially in this field the public has rights and needs which must be taken into account. (R.P.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] A method for fast and exact determination of both strontium isotopes in milk and other foodstuffs, combination high performance ion chromatographic separation with by liquid scintillation counting, which enables the desired results to be obtained with very satisfactory precision and reproducibility within 24 hours, has been developed. The lowest detectable activity lies by 3 Bq/liter for Sr-90 and 1 Bq/liter for Sr-89 which is satisfactory for assessing a situation in a time crisis. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] An attempt has been made to show possibilities for measuring movements of water in concrete and aerated concrete. The behaviour of the nuclides 24Na, 42K, 64Cu, 67Ga, 82Br, /sup 99m/Tc, 131I, 140Ba, 140La in the system water-concrete has been observed experimentally. Their different properties enable us to label both the surface of concrete and the front of water moving through concrete or the distance covered by water. (author)
