AbstractAbstract
[en] The San Onofre experiment is designed to investigate neutrino oscillations in the parameter space suggested by the atmospheric neutrino problem. A liquid-scintillator-based 12-ton detector will be installed at 650 m from the two units of the San Onofre power reactor. For the detection of the anti ve-induced inverse beta decay reaction a novel four-fold coincidence method is used allowing effective suppression of background at the relatively low shallow depth of 25 mwe. We report on the experimental method and demonstrate its feasibility by presenting results from recent test experiments performed with a prototype detector in the Tendon Gallery of the San Onofre Unit 2 reactor

AbstractAbstract
[en] A light ion focal plane detector of 1.2 m length using single wire proportional detectors and cathode readout is described. Focal plane reconstruction and vertical position determination is achieved. Good background reduction and 0.6 mm FWHM detector resolution has been obtained with standard electronic setup. In operation with the spectrograph a 2.7 keV linewidth has been observed for elastic scattering of 20 MeV deuterons from a 50 μg/cm2 Au-strip target, 0.5 mm wide. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] We report on measurements of the neutron backgrounds for neutrino experiments at shallow depth (such as the proposed San Onofre neutrino oscillation experiment). A detector capable of pulse-shape discrimination measured the flux of fast neutrons at 20 mwe depth in the Stanford Underground Facility to be (1.07 ± 0.30) X 10-6 cm-2 s-1. An experiment, situated in the Tendon Gallery of the San Onofre Unit 2 reactor. studied spallation neutrons from muons traversing Pb and Cu. An underground experiment in the SUF, employing a detector filled with Gd-loaded liquid scintillator, is measuring the neutron production rate and multiplicity for muon spallation in low-A material (hydrocarbon-based liquid scintillator)

[en] In a magnetic spectrograph study of 207Pb(d,p),(d-vector,p) and 208Pb(p,p') reactions at incident beam energies of 22 MeV, an appreciable part of the transition have been observed in the excitation range above 5 MeV up to the neutron-emission threshold at 7.38 MeV in 208Pb. For the low-spin negative-parity states, unique assignments are obtained which completes the 207Pb(d,pγ) study of M Schramm. (author)
