AbstractAbstract
[en] Synchrotron radiation is used to study the electronic structure of the energetic material 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene (TATB). Element and site-specific density of unoccupied electronic states in TATB is probed by x-ray-absorption spectroscopy at the C, N, and O K edges. In addition to illuminating the electronic structure of TATB, the absorption data enable the understanding of microscopic changes occurring in such compounds due to various damage mechanisms. The absorption data are further supplemented by data from the core-level and valence-band photoelectron spectroscopy of thin films of TATB

AbstractAbstract
[en] Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) with soft x-rays is uniquely suited to study the electronic structure of a variety of materials, but is currently limited by low (fluorescence yield) count rates. This limitation is overcome with a new high-transmission spectrometer that allows to measure soft x-ray RIXS 'maps'. The S L2,3 RIXS map of CdS is discussed and compared with density functional calculations. The map allows the extraction of decay channel-specific 'absorption spectra,' giving detailed insight into the wave functions of occupied and unoccupied electronic states.

AbstractAbstract
[en] The pristine state and soft X-ray induced decomposition of two aromatic amino acids, viz. phenylalanine and tyrosine, have been studied by means of XPS and NEXAFS. The spectroscopic data on the radiation decomposition have been supplemented by a mass-spectral analysis of desorbed species in the residual gas. Despite very similar chemical structures, the two amino acids show a drastically different behavior towards ionizing radiation: phenylalanine degrades very quickly whereas tyrosine shows a prominent stability against radiation damage. Reasons for this difference are discussed in relation to radical-mediated reactions responsible for the decomposition

AbstractAbstract
[en] The valence electronic structure of zinc oxide was characterized by X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES). The different features in the XE spectra were identified by comparison with UPS data recorded for an O-terminated ZnO(0 0 0 1-bar) single crystal and with the aid of ab initio quantum chemical calculations explicitly considering the presence of the core hole. For zinc oxide powder samples, the influence of the specific surface area on the XE spectra was investigated in a comparative study. The spectra of all powder samples were found to be dominated by bulk contributions, but surface contributions as indicated by significant deviations from the bulk spectra were detected for powders with very high specific surface areas corresponding to a mean particle size in the 10 nm range
