AbstractAbstract
[en] In nuclear power plants with VVER reactors, located in the states of the former USSR, the treatment of solid and liquid radioactive waste represents a problem which--besides measures concerning the increase of reactor safety--requires a quick solution at a high technical level. To help address this problem, Nukem GmbH jointly with Balakovo NPP and the Nuclear Power Project Institute AEP Nizhni Novgorod, has developed a waste Treatment Center (WTC) for the Balakowo NPP. This center possesses all the necessary technological installations to transform liquid low-level, medium-level and solid low-level radioactive waste accumulated to date and waste arising during the futures operation of Balakovo NPP (4 reactors VVER-1000) in a way which allows a safe long-time storage

AbstractAbstract
[en] Cluster beams of various gases have been produced by a versatile test setup, where the configuration of nozzles, skimmers and collimators has been studied and optimized. The parameters determining the cluster yield were investigated using elastic electron scattering. Functional dependences of the various quantities have been extracted. A detailed evaluation of the pumping capacities shows that, compared to existing cluster targets, much lower pumping capacities are required for gases of mass higher than that of hydrogen. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] A method to discriminate between electromagnetic and hadronic showers in modular electromagnetic calorimeters is presented. The algorithm is based on the analysis of the lateral dispersion of the shower distribution. Special emphasis is also given to the problem of identifying and unfolding overlapping showers. The performance of the methods has been checked by analyzing experimental data taken with a 7x7 lead glass array at an electron and a pion beam in the energy range from 3 to 40 GeV as well as by analyzing the properties of the reconstructed π0 peak observed in the two photon invariant mass spectra from heavy-ion reactions. AbstractAbstract
[en] The production of direct photons has been investigated in reactions of p and 16O projectiles at 60 and 200 A.GeV with C and Au nuclei. Photon and π0 spectra have been measured in the pseudorapidity range 1.5 ≤ η ≤ 2.1 for the transverse momentum region 0.4 GeV/c ≤ pT ≤ 2.8 GeV/c employing the lead-glass spectrometer SAPHIR. An upper limit of 15% at the 90% confidence level for the direct photon signal relative to the neutral pion production is obtained from the comparison of measured photon spectra with Monte Carlo simulations of the hadronic background based on the reconstructed yield of π0 and η mesons. Consequences for a possible phase transition to a quark-gluon plasma are discussed. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Correlations of positive pions are investigated in the target fragmentation region of 200 A GeV 16O + nucleus collisions. The pions are measured with the Plastic Ball detectors in the WA80 experiment at the CERN SPS. The detailed behaviour of the fitted parameters on rapidity, centrality and the number of spectator nucleons is studied. The data indicate a large source in central O + Au collisions for ylab ≤ 0. The observations are compatible with a substantial amount of rescattering in the target. (orig.)
