[en] The charge transfer has been investigated in T/sub d/- and O/sub h/-symmetrical clusters Me/sub n/H/sub m/ (Me = Ti, Nb, Ni, Pd) using the SW-Xα-method. The local electronic redistribution caused by absorbed hydrogen has been studied by local difference electron densities and integral difference charges. The charge transfer Me-H is small in contrast to that of the 'proton-model' as well as to that of the 'hydrid-model'. Hydrogen is at the O/sub h/-interstitial sites of metals an electron acceptor and at the T/sub d/-interstitial sites an electron donator. The direction of polarity is influenced neither by methodical aspects (site of cluster, partition of cluster, muffin-tin approximation) nor by the content of hydrogen in the metal. The experimentally well-known dependence of the H2-partial pressure from the content of hydrogen in the metal is discussed in the one-phase region of PdH/sub x/ and TiH/sub x/. A rough estimation of direct covalent pair attraction and Coulombic repulsion of partial ionized hydrogen atoms shows the fact that the H2-partial pressure increases when the number of absorbed hydrogen atoms is enlarged. [en] The energy of the metal-metal-bond of complexes of the type [Me2X8]x- (Me = Re, Mo, Te; X = Cl, Br) has been evaluated in the frame of a simple free electron model and compared with experimental data. Due to the analysis of the bonding orbitals quadruple or stronger Me-Me-bonds have been found, corresponding to σ2π4delta2 and σ2π4delta3 bonding configurations. The charge density distribution of the bonding orbitals has been drawn. (author)
