AbstractAbstract
[en] KM3NeT is multi-cubic-kilometer neutrino telescope under construction in the Mediterranean Sea. In the currently running Phase 1 of the project, almost 30 detection units - 700 m tall vertical structures holding 18 Digital Optical Modules (DOMs) each - will be produced and deployed. A KM3NeT DOM consists of a pressure resistant glass sphere encapsulating 31 photomultiplier tubes of 80 mm diameter, readout electronics and additional instrumentation for calibration and monitoring. The Erlangen Centre for Astroparticle Physics is one of the DOM integration sites of the project. This contribution describes the design, functionality and integration procedure of the KM3NeT DOM.

AbstractAbstract
[en] KM3NeT is a future multi-cubic-kilometer neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean Sea. As a first step towards project implementation, a preproduction model of the telescope detection unit will be produced and deployed in the sea in March 2013. The detection unit is a flexible, vertical structure of a few 100 m length holding digital optical modules (DOMs). A facet-like DOM encapsulates 31 photomultiplier tubes of 80 mm diameter inside of 17-inch pressure resistant glass sphere. One of such DOMs will be produced at Erlangen Centre for Astroparticle Physics. This contribution describes design, functionality and assembly of the DOM.

AbstractAbstract
[en] The KM3NeT project is a future multi-cubic-kilometre scale neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean Sea. The telescope's detection units will be instrumented with optical modules, each housing 31 three-inch photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). Three companies, ET Enterprises, Hamamatsu and MELZ-FEU, develop new types of such PMTs for the KM3NeT project. Hamamatsu has delivered 53 PMTs of R6233MOD type, which will be used to make first fully operated prototypes of the optical modules. The PMTs have been tested at the Erlangen Centre for Astroparticle Physics. These results are presented. The timing parameter ''transit time spread'' (TTS) and the sensitive photocathode area for these PMTs are slightly worse than the KM3NeT specifications. Therefore, Hamamatsu has designed a new 80-mm diameter PMT (R12199) aiming to improve TTS and sensitive area. The delivery of the first samples is expected by the end of December 2011. The new PMTs are tested, and the results are presented.

AbstractAbstract
[en] New model of the single photoelectron charge distribution from PMTs is presented. This model features the asymmetrical shape of the distribution with a high tail towards small amplitudes in contrast to the simple Gaussian distribution frequently used. New model of the SiPM signal response with cross-talk is presented. Influence of the cross talk is modelled with a multinomial distribution. This model demonstrates good results when fitting the SiPM signal charge distribution.

AbstractAbstract
[en] Current neutrino detectors are approaching a sensitivity that allows one to detect Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in their high state. However, the expected signals might be too weak to result in a significant detection. One possibility to increase the detection chance is to focus the searches during states of high electromagnetic activity, especially in the very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray regime. In this context a good knowledge of the phenomenology of gamma-ray flux variability of the known VHE AGN is crucial. Here, we present our effort in archiving and combining VHE gamma-ray lightcurves and first results including a lightcurve of Mrk 421 spanning 15 years and the estimation of an average observed high state rate

AbstractAbstract
[en] KM3NeT is a future multi-cubic-kilometre neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean Sea. To select photomultipliers (PMTs) of different types and from different manufactures, detailed characterization of candidate PMTs have been performed. Special attention is paid to parameters not specified in detail by manufacturers, such as collection efficiency and afterpulsing. These parameters have been measured in pulse-mode operation at the test bench of the Erlangen Centre for Astroparticle Physics. The results are presented.
