AbstractAbstract
[en] Proceeding from radiobiological aspects, the advantages of seed irradiation are outlined. Factors to be considered in applying this method are: moisture, age and degree of maturity of seeds, storage time of irradiated seeds, radiation energy, dose rate, climate, seasonal dependence. The effects of these factors are demonstrated for various plants. The irradiation facility 'Kolos' mounted on a truck and containing 3,500 Ci 137Cs is described. The results of the large-scale testing of this facility and of a cost-benefit analysis are presented. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Parameters, advantages and disadvantages of radiation techniques used in the radiobiological technology (RBT) in the USSR and abroad are reviewed. Ionizing radiation sources applied for the accomplishment of RBT processes: 60Co and 137Cs nuclide sources, accelerators, reactors are characterized. Requirements for radiation facilities used in RBT are enumerated. An attention is paid to the technological dosimetry when carrying out RBT processes and to economic and technical aspects as well. Radiation facilities used in experiments and tests in the field of radiobiological technology as well as for carrying out industrial processes are discussed in detail

[en] A gamma-installation containing a shielding container, a mechanism for veritical displacement and intended for microbiological and biochemical investigations is proposed. For the installation to be portable and transportable with sufficient radiation protection, there have been mounted in it directional tubular shaft, a cassette with a gamma-ray source and a sliding exposure cell in the form of a lead-filled tubular rod with a hollow volume, in which windows are cut out preventing gamma-ray absorption by the cell walls, and also an opening for loading investigation objects. Some versions of the installation have been proposed. In order to provide radiation safety during loading investigation objects and during moving the exposure cell, an upper protective collar bushing and the lower protective stepped plug have been mounted along the external part of the tubular shaft
