AbstractAbstract
[en] Observations such as landfalls which indirectly indicate subrosion were used in order to perform an analysis of subrosion behaviour taking into account geological and hydrogeological conditions. Therefore the statements on subrosion behaviour refer to structures where subrosion phenomena were observed due to the effects of brine formation. Statistical studies of 225 cases demonstrated that structures with a caprock thickness of about > 180 m up to < 420 m show subrosion phenomena under certain conditions, and structures with caprock thicknesses of < 180 m always; that indicates intensified subrosion processes during the Upper Quaternary Age. AbstractAbstract
[en] The present R and D project served, on the one hand, for strength tests by means of 15 appropriate triaxial large-scale experiments with backfull of salt fines, that means determination of materials parameters not influenced by scale effects. On the other hand, data were to be prepared for a comparison of results from large-scale and small-scale experiments. Those 15 experiments were grouped into three series wich differed by the size of the biggest grain diameter. The test material of the three series had qualitatively equal grain distribution lines displaced against each other. That made possible the determination of the material parameters K, V, E modules, Poisson ratio, angle of friction, and cohesion. In addition, a comparison of the results of the three series could show whether the material behaviour depended on the maximum grain diameter. Microscopic studies of stressed heap were designed to provide information on the behaviour of salt fines at grain limits. (orig.)

(orig.)Original Title

AbstractAbstract
[en] Currently, the mass of the W-boson (MW) is measured at the Tevatron from the transverse mass distribution (MT). At higher luminosities, the uncertainty with which MW can be extracted will degrade. We present an alternate method to measure MW at the Tevatron with high luminosity from a direct comparison of the W and Z distributions

AbstractAbstract
[en] The aim consisted in the mathematical determination of salt ascent rates and, derived from that, the determination of leaching rates of selected salt domes in northwest Germany. It was particularly necessary to find out the orders of magnitude by which the ascent rates change during geological periods, and the possible causes. Calculations were made by the computer programme ISM (Interactive Surface Modeling). Thus it could be tested whether a uniform method would permit routine work on the above question in northwest German salt domes. (orig.)

Fragestellung an nordwestdeutschen Salzstoecken erlaubt. (orig.)Original Title

AbstractAbstract
[en] This conference was devoted to physics in collisions. The scientific program involved a broad range of topics. On the first day, talks concentrated on electroweak physics, structure functions, photoproduction and heavy quark production. A special session was dedicated to the status of the top quark analysis at the Tevatron. On the second day the scope of the presentations shifted toward the status of QCD, heavy flavor physics and tau decays. On the third and last day of the conference, the topics ranged from strange particle decays to the highest energy cosmic rays. The conference closed with a glimpse to the future in a talk on the prospects for physics beyond the standard model

AbstractAbstract
[en] It is possible that quarks and/or leptons have substructure that will become manifest at high energies. Here we investigate the limits on the muon compositeness scale that could be obtained at the First Muon Collider using Bhabha scattering. We study this limit as a function of the collider energy and the angular cut imposed by the detector capability

AbstractAbstract
[en] We explore the ability of the Large Hadron Collider to measure the mass of the W boson. We believe that a precision better than ∼ 15 MeV could be attained, based on a year of operation at low luminosity (1033 cm-2 s-1). If this is true, this measurement will be the world's best determination of the W mass. We feel this interesting opportunity warrants investigation in more detail. 10 refs., 2 figs

AbstractAbstract
[en] Particle production in inhomogeneous external fields is studied for the case of a purely scalar theory. Starting from the proper time formalism and an approximation valid for slowly varying fields it is shown how the interpretation of the effective Lagrangian as a local observable quantity affects Lorentz covariance and causal boundary conditions. Using the imaginary part of a suitably modified effective Lagrangian as a local pair production rate, large discrepancies between perturbative and nonperturbative total pair production probabilities are found for a model external field that is inhogeneous both in space and time. 33 refs., 6 figs
