AbstractAbstract
[en] The work enrichment situation is reported. The development of enrichment in the U.S. and in Europe is outlined. A brief description is given of the technology of separation by diffusion and by centrifugation and the advantages and disadvantages of the two processes are compared. Finally the supply and demand situation is briefly considered. (U.K.)

[en] The environmentalist opposition to nuclear power was given the opportunity to present its case in an open discussion on nuclear energy organized by the European Commission in Brussels. In strong language condemning the EEC policy the environmentalists gave notice of their intention to reshape it. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The first outage of the PWR Sizewell B in the United Kingdom is due to commence on June 28th. This is a new experience for the operator, Nuclear Electric, whose other reactors are all gas-cooled. Preparations have been in hand from three years before the start date. The outage manager and his support team have selected experienced contractors from around the world to undertake nine major contracts which will cover most of the outage work. The novel ''partnering'' strategy employed to integrate the work of these contractors and that of the in-house team is described. Contracts have been awarded on a rolling 3-cycle basis which have the potential of long-term awards provided the contractors meet the high standards demanded. Shut-down safety is a special feature of PWR outages and customized software will be used to determine the safety condition of the plant under different configurations. Planning strategy for the outage includes a systematic classification of the work that could be carried out into ''core work'' and ''optional work''. (UK)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The 1975 law which attempted to establish coherent procedures for approving sites for nuclear facilities in Italy also directed the major government bodies to begin the process of establishing a long term siting plan including a 'bank' of suitable sites. The most important of the technical problems encountered is the difficult geological conditions of the country. The method of approach in establishing a 'site bank', the techniques being developed for selection, and methods of assessment are considered. (U.K.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] A brief account is given of insurance protection in the nuclear industry, and the legislation involved. Aspects discussed are: third part liability and the role of government in setting the maximum amount of compensation; the development and concept of channelling the liability exclusively to the operator; the development of nuclear insurance facilities in Europe and the USA; and the emergence in Europe of international agreements on third party liability for protection of neighbouring countries in the event of a major accident. The development of liability law in the USA from the time of the Price Anderson Act of 1957 through subsequent legislation is described. (U.K.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The paper reports on an international conference on ''Transportation for the nuclear industry'', organised by the Institution of Nuclear Engineers, Stratford-upon-Avon, 1988. The conference concentrated on the transport of spent fuel containers (aka casks or flasks) whose safety problems have similarities to those of reactors. The design of these flasks is described. Future designs of flask must take account of the move towards higher burnup fuels, and this is discussed, along with the testing of flasks. Cast iron Castor casks, transport modes, future transport needs, and tracking shipments of radioactive material by satellite, are also considered. (U.K.)
