AbstractAbstract
[en] This book features reviews of high-resolution MRI of the knee, MRI of the normal and ischmeic hip, MRI of the heart, and temporomandibular joint imaging, as well as thorough discussion on artifacts in magnetic resonance imaging. Contributors consider the clinical applications of gadolinium-DTPA in magnetic resonance imaging and the clinical use of partial saturation and saturation recovery sequences. Timely reports assess the current status of rapid MRI and describe a new rapid gated cine MRI technique. Also included is an analysis of cerebrospinal fluid flow effects during MRI of the central nervous system

AbstractAbstract
[en] MR imaging performed with standard fields of view and body-receive coils fails to demonstrate the vast majority of regenerative nodules and fibrous septa that are obvious on gross inspection of cirrhotic liver specimens. The authors of this paper investigate the utility of using surface coils to achieve high-resolution images of cirrhotic livers. Three-inch (7.62-cm) circular surface coils were combined with an 8-cm field of view and 3-mm-thick sections to image eight liver specimens (six cirrhotic livers and two control livers) on a 1.5-T GE Signa MR system. Spin-echo sequences (with TR/TE of 400/17; 2,500/40; and 2,500/80) and gradient-echo sequences were performed

AbstractAbstract
[en] The authors of this paper investigate the potential application of lipid-coated iron oxide particles as an MR contrast agent for imaging inflammatory process by using a rat subcutaneous abscess model induced by turpentine. Ten male Sprague-Dawley rats received subcutaneous injections of 0.1 mL of turpentine in the flank. At 24-36 hours later, the rats developed a subcutaneous abscess of 1-1.8 cm. An intravenous injection of lipid-coated iron oxide particles, Ferrosome (Vestar) at doses of 25, 40, 100, 200 μg/kg was administered. The animals were imaged at 12-24 hours later on a 1.5-T magnet using a 3-inch (7.62-cm) surface coil. Two animals were also imaged 5 days later. T1-weighted, T2-weighted, and multiplanar gradient-recalled (MPGR) sequences were obtained. The abscess was then excised and examined with routine H-E and iron staining

AbstractAbstract
[en] To study the MR appearance of the liver after radiation therapy (RT), the authors have correlated the MR findings with the radiation dosage and time from therapy (3 months to 11 years) in 16 patients. Six of 16 patients had abnormal liver parenchymal changes that corresponded to the radiation portals used. Five of six patients had large areas of low signal intensity, on short TR/TE and long TR/TE images as early as 6 months after receiving >3,000 R. Two of six patients had areas of decreased signal intensity on short TR/TE images and of high signal intensity on long TR/TE images. This high signal intensity was noted in one patient 4 years after electron beam RT
