AbstractAbstract
[en] We investigated ZnO(0001) single crystals annealed in high vacuum with respect to their magnetic properties and cluster formation tendency after implant-doping with Fe. While metallic Fe cluster formation is suppressed, no evidence for the relevance of the Fe magnetic moment to the observed ferromagnetism was found. The latter along with the cluster suppression is discussed with respect to defects in the ZnO host matrix, since the crystalline quality of the substrates was lowered due to the preparation as observed by x-ray diffraction

AbstractAbstract
[en] There has been considerable interest in high-k-dielectrics rare earth oxides as replacement for SiO2 in advanced field-effect transistors (FETs). Promising candidates are the perovskites SmScO3, GdScO3 and DyScO3. A tendency towards antiferromagnetic ordering at low temperatures is observed for the high magnetic moments at rare earth atoms. We analyse the electronic structure of the single crystalline samples by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and firstprinciples theory. The electronic structure calculations are performed with the augmented plane waves method (WIEN2k code) of the density functional theory, taking into account the spin-orbit interaction and orbital-dependent potential (LDA+U). The calculated positions of the main features in the valence band agree with the XPS data, the underlying chemical bonding can be analysed in detail. Small differences in the electronic structure, resulting in different stability of ferro and antiferromagnetic configurations, are discussed

[en] Full text:The dichroic properties of iron oxide single crystals have been studied with synchrotron radiation. For magnetite (Fe3O4), circular magnetic dichroism at the Fe 2p edge in a field of 0.7 T was found to be in good agreement with previous results, and with recent theoretical calculations. The oxygen K edge x-ray linear dichroic absorption and resonant x-ray emission of haematite (Fe2O3) have also been examined. The x-ray absorption is found to be strongly dichroic, as previously observed for thin films: there are substantial spectral differences for the incident electric vector parallel or perpendicular to the c axis. The resonant x-ray emission however is only weakly dichroic and the emission spectra show only subtle differences between the two polarizations. The reasons for this are discussed

AbstractAbstract
[en] Nickel oxide (NiO) nanoflowers, prepared by thermal decomposition, exhibit anomalous magnetic properties far below the blocking temperature, i.e., a cusp in both the zero-field-cooled and field-cooled curves at about 21 K. Detailed characterization discloses that the individual NiO nanoflower consists of porous crystals with holes (1.0-1.5 nm in size) inside. We believe that the low temperature magnetic feature observed here could be a new kind of spin transition for the uncompensated spins around the holes and will trigger more studies in other nanostructured antiferromagnetic materials.

AbstractAbstract
[en] Magnetite (Fe_3O_4) is an eligible candidate for magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) since it shows a high spin polarization at the Fermi level as well as a high Curie temperature of 585°C. In this study, Fe_3O_4/MgO/Co-Fe-B MTJs were manufactured. A sign change in the TMR is observed after annealing the MTJs at temperatures between 200°C and 280°C. Our findings suggest an Mg interdiffusion from the MgO barrier into the Fe_3O_4 as the reason for the change of the TMR. Additionally, different treatments of the magnetite interface (argon bombardment, annealing at 200°C in oxygen atmosphere) during the preparation of the MTJs have been studied regarding their effect on the performance of the MTJs. A maximum TMR of up to -12% could be observed using both argon bombardment and annealing in oxygen atmosphere, despite exposing the magnetite surface to atmospheric conditions before the deposition of the MgO barrier

[en] Magnetic vortex cores are interacting with and can even be annihilated by artificial defects, such as holes. These defects have been fabricated by focused ion beam milling (FIB) into the magnetic domains, domain walls and the center of square-shaped vortices, known as Landau structures. We report the imaging of the magnetization dynamics of Landau structures containing holes by means of x-ray magnetic circular dichroism photo-emission electron microscopy (XMCD-PEEM). Due to the high lateral and temporal resolution of this method, the magnetic excitation spectrum, which is characteristic for the vortex-hole interaction, is investigated in detail. We find that the vortex core as well as domain walls can be trapped by small holes. With the help of micromagnetic simulations we show that the vortex gyrotropic motion frequency is enhanced, whereas the amplitude is significantly reduced in the case of non-centric holes in domain walls.
