AbstractAbstract
[en] Registration is one of the tools that can lead to a guarantee of radiation protection expertise. However, in some cases registration or certification becomes an objective in itself and gives the wrong impression that as long as experts are registered, control of the quality of the expertise is no longer necessary. Next to registration extra training or post-training is required for the four knowledge levels of radiation protection experts is required

AbstractAbstract
[en] The reactivity of some metal ions towards the hydrated electron depends strongly on the ligands. Most of the aquo complexes are highly reactive and the rate constants approach the diffusion controlled limit. This also holds for the complex of Cu(II) with ethylenediaminetetraacetate, CuEDTA2-. This complex is known to be labile towards substitution: one coordination position can be occupied by NH3, ethylenediamine, CN-, or OH-. In this study the influence of the equilibrium: CuEDTA2- + H2O = CuEDTA(OH)3- + H+ on the reaction rate with e-sub(aq) has been measured for a series of ionic strengths. The equilibrium constant is defined by: Ksub(CuEDTA(OH)) = [CuEDTA(OH)3-][H+]/[CuEDTA2-]. Literature values for this constant are pKsub(CuEDTA(OH)) = 11.6 (μ = 1) and pKsub(CuEDTA(OH)) = 11.4. Consequently measurements were made in the pH range 7.5 to 11 and above pH 12. Experimental details are given. Kinetic salt effects for the reactions of e-sub(aq) with CuEDTA2- and CuEDTA(OH)3- are shown. The results are discussed. (U.K.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] A transient absorption spectrum was measured in single crystals of KAl(SO4)2x12H2O by means of pulse radiolysis at ambient temperature. The decay can be described by two exponentials with half-lives of about 100 μs and 2 ms. The transient is attributed to excess-electrons, as it is suppressed in crystals doped with Cd2+ ions. AbstractAbstract
[en] Absorption spectra are reported for Cd EDTA3-, Cd CDTA3-. Pb EDTA3- and Pb CDTA3- formed by the reaction of e-sub(aq) with Cd EDTA2-, Cd CDTA2-, Pb EDTA2- and Pb CDTA2-. Estimates are given for the stability constants of CD EDTA3- and Cd CDTA3-. The extinction coefficient at 320 nm for Cd EDTA3- is epsilon320 = (9.7+-0.9) x 103 dm3 mol-1 cm-1. The rate constants for the reactions of e-sub(aq) with Cd CDTA2- and Pb CDTA2are 1 x 103 dm3 mol-1 s-1and 1.9 x 109 dm3 mol-1 s-1. The rate constants for the reactions of H2O2 with Cd EDTA3- and Pb EDTA3- are 2 x 109 dm3 mol-1 s-1 and 2.5 x 109 dm3 mol-1 s-1. Some experimental data are reported concerning the disappearance of Cd EDTA3- in the presence of several alcohols. For the reaction Cd EDTA3- + Pb EDTA2- a rate constant of 4 x 106 dm3 mol-1 s-1 was determined. This value was compared with a value estimated by means of the Marcus theory. (orig.)

(orig.)Record Type

AbstractAbstract
[en] This article continues the critical discussion of recommendation ICRP-30, given in the preceding article of this issue of the bulletin. Three models are presented: the lung model, the bone model and the case of submersion in a radioactive cloud. The last one is accompanied by a calculation example in which the ALI (Annual Limit of Intake) and the DAC (Derived Air Concentration) are also computed. (Auth.)
