AbstractAbstract
[en] All methods for the preparation of spherical particles of thorium oxide and/or — carbide using sol-gel type processes [1, 2, 3] are based on the gelation of drops of a colloidal uranium/thorium solution dispersed in an organic solvent. The difference between such methods lies in the chemical process used for the preparation of the colloidal solution and in the system used to obtain the gelation of the sol drops. As it is known [3], the method proposed by CNEN for the preparation of spherical particles of thorium/uranium carbide by sol-gel way utilises the extraction of nitric acid by means of a liquid anionic exchanger, both for the preparation of the colloidal solution and for the gelation of the sol drops. The laboratory results so far achieved have been encouraging and have led to the demonstration of the feasibility of the method proposed, which has been chosen by the Dragon Project as a reference process for the remote refabrication of fuel elements for Dragon type high temperature gas cooled reactors [4]. Research is now in progress for the purpose of improving the various stages of the process; this report refers in particular to the preparation of the colloidal thorium/uranium (6) solution.
