AbstractAbstract
[en] The time resolution of a scintillation detector can be calculated from the scintillator illumination function, and the response of the photomultiplier to an instantaneous pulse of light. Such calculations using the parameters of present scintillators and photomultipliers agree with measured resolutions and predict improvements which can be achieved. Parameters of commercial and some promising experimental fast scintillators are given, as well as measurements on transit time spread of some fast photomultipliers. (U.S.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The bunching requirements for a heavy-ion tandem-linac accelerator are defined and a bunching system to satisfy these requirements is outlined. This discussion introduces an experiment on the bunching of 45 MeV 16O ions by means of a lambda/2 superconducting-helix resonator. The measured ion-bunch width is 64 psec, a value dominated by the resolution width of the ion detector. By correcting for the detector-resolution width one infers that the ion bunch itself is less than 40 psec wide. (U.S.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Isomeric states in 194Au with half-lives of 600plus-or-minus8 and 420plus-or-minus10 ms have been studied by observing the delayed γ rays following the 194Pt(p,n) and 194Pt(d,2n) reactions. γ-ray singles and γ-γ coincidence measurements were made and isomer cross section ratios were calculated. It is argued that the isomer at 80.5 keV has the shell model configuration (πd3/2, νi13/2)5+, while the higher-lying isomer is believed to decay by an unobserved isomeric transition

AbstractAbstract
[en] A tissue-equivalent ionization chamber with associated circuitry has been developed for area radiation monitoring in the Intense Pulsed-Neutron Source (IPNS) facility at Argonne National Laboratory. The conventional chamber configuration was modified in order to increase the electric field and effective volume thereby achieving higher sensitivity and linearity. The instrument provides local and remote radiation level indications and a high level alarm. Twenty-four of these instruments were fabricated for use at various locations in the experimental area of the IPNS-1 facility
