AbstractAbstract
[en] A fast valve injects gas transiently near the insulator in order to optimize pressures separately for breakdown and beam generation. On a different machine without gas injection the interaction of the ion beam with targets of variable thicknesses can be used to diagnose the beam

AbstractAbstract
[en] Ion beams created in a plasma focus electrical discharge are evidenced and measured from interaction with CD2 and DLi targets. Aluminum targets are also used with observation of the radiation temperature and material expansion velocity. Comparison between experimental measurements and numerical computations allows to determine energy deposition in the aluminum foil as well as beams values. With the 200 kJ Actime facility 2 to 3 MJ/g deposition is obtained in aluminum on approximately one square centimeter. A fast valve gas injection has been developed on another facility and preliminary results are given

AbstractAbstract
[en] Improvement in laser-plasma analysis makes it necessary to perform accurate calibration in the soft X-ray range. For this purpose we have modified a plasma Focus device (27 kJ, 40 kV, 400 kA) in order to enhance its soft X-ray emission: a hollow anode is used to prevent hard X-ray bremsstrahlung emission and a lot of filling gases are chosen for their characteristic lines in the keV and sub-keV range (Ne, Ar, O, N, CH4). These emissions have been absolutely measured with a X-ray bolometer and can be used directly or indirectly (in the fluorescent mode: Mg Kα at 1.254 keV) for X-ray calibration of various diagnostics. Some detector calibrations in pulsed regime (10 ns) are presented (Films, solid state PIN diodes, CCD arrays)

AbstractAbstract
[en] In plasma focus experiments the essential phenomenon is the turbulent interaction of electrical current with plasma which leads to the generation of intense beams of electrons and ions. These are responsible for the high emission of X-rays and neutrons by interaction with the anode and the filling deuterium, respectively. The ion beam can also be directly used on a massive deuterated polyethylene target. At 25 mm from the anode of a 340 kJ - 40 kV facility one measures an average deuteron current of 1.2 MA during 30 ns. The mean energy of the deuterons is 300 keV. Scaling laws cover a large range of experiments between 20 kA and 2 MA

AbstractAbstract
[en] The present report is the edition of the lectures given in a conference on the Focus experiment held at the Centre d'etudes de Limeil, on Oct. 1975. After a survey of the early laboratories one will find the main results obtained in Limeil concerning interferometry, laser scattering, electric and magnetic-measurements, X-ray and neutron emission and also the possible use of explosive current generators instead of capacitor banks at high energy levels. The principal lines of future research are given in the conclusion

AbstractAbstract
[en] The historical account of induction linacs is briefly presented. The principle of operation is then explained and the main parameters for induction cell dimensioning are reviewed. The developments of induction technology at DAM are illustrated through the realizations of the LELIA linac devoted to Free Electron Laser (FEL) application and the PIVAIR prototype for the AIRIX Flash X-ray Radiography project. Within this frame we describe the induction cell technology development. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] In a Mather-Focus experiment, it was shown that 80% of the neutron emitted were generated through bombardment. The apparatus was operated with various targets at a distance of 13mm from the anode. In the low pressure regime, a deuteron beam of high energy was produced. Its emission duration was measured using a CD2 target

AbstractAbstract
[en] An axisymmetric microscope with 10 X magnification has been constructed; its resolution has been measured using severals grids, backlighted by an X-ray source and found to be near 25 μm. So it could be used to make images of laser driven plasmas in the soft X-ray region. In order to see rapidly those images we have associated it with a new detector. It is a small image converter tube with a soft X-ray photocathode and a P20 phosphor deposited on an optic fiber plate. The electronic image appearing on the screen is read by a CCD working in the spectral range. An electronic image readout chain, which is identical to those we use with streak cameras, then processes automatically and immediatly the images given by the microscope

AbstractAbstract
[en] The purpose of the present talk is to give the most important results concerning plasma focus research at the Centre d'Etudes de Limeil. At first we will describe the structure of the current sheath during the axial propagation. Then we will speak about the singularity phase and the associate turbulent resistivity which comes before the beam phase. And we will see that plasma focus can be considered as the most powerful ion beam generator

AbstractAbstract
[en] Dense and hot plasmas, created by interaction of a laser beam with a metallic target, radiate an important part of the absorbed energy in soft X-ray range. For the first time in this type of experiment a bolometer have been studied and used to measure this X-ray emission. This X-ray calorimeter presents many advantages: no effect due to thermal losses, fast response (20 ns), insensibility to the laser light and ions emission, high sensitivity (3.7+-0.2)x10-3 V.J-1.m2 and low threshold 1 J.m-2, possibility of direct electrical calibration. The results obtained with this bolometer are in good agreement with those given by a broad band spectrometer used in the same experimental condition
