AbstractAbstract
[en] The application of the 1976 of A. Weinig developed Penning ionizer at the source required a new conception of the atomic beam optic. For this reason the velocity distribution of the applied liquid nitrogen cooled atomic beam was measured. For hydrogen a supersonic distribution was determined with the most probable velocity Vsub(w) = 1549 +- 104 m/s. Using this result a for the pretended spatial conditions advantageous compressor hexapole magnet system could be calculated using a tracking code. Density measurements at the polarized atomic beam at the point at the greatest ionization probability resulted in values around 5 x 1011 atoms/cm3 in agreement with the calculations. Using the new hexapole magnet doublets with two between them placed high frequency interfaces for deuterons theoretically polarization values can be attained which are not realizable using conventional atomic beam sources: Psub(z) = +-1; Psub(z)sub(z) = -2. The Bonn source yielded a polarized current at 160 μA protons or deuterons. Of this 50 μA of the deuteron current lie in a phase space which is accepted by the Bonn cyclotron. Because of the mass dependence of the emittance of the Penning ionizer the usable polarized proton current is 35 μA. (orig./HSI)

AbstractAbstract
[en] To increase the performance of future ECR ion sources, microwave sources at frequencies above 20 GHz at cw power levels of some 10 kW are required. As conventional microwave tubes, like Klystrons or TWTs reach their limit at about these values, the application of gyrotron tubes is considered. The paper describes first the physics of the gyrotron interaction. Then the two gyrotron concepts pursued by ABB are presented, the cylindrical and the quasioptical gyrotron, respectively. The technical realisation and the operation of a gyrotron oscillator is demonstrated with some experimental results of an 8 GHz, 400 kW tube presently under test. The layout of low power gyrotron oscillators for ECR plasma heating at 30 GHz with a cw output power of 20 kW follows. Operation at 1st and 2nd harmonic for both gyrotron concepts is evaluated. Finally some ideas concerning the r.f. transmission line and wave launching structure into an ECRIS are shown

[en] A Penning discharge, produced in the high magnetic field of a superconducting solenoid was used to ionize a polarized deuterium beam. An extracted polarized ion beam intensity of about 60 μA and a tensor polarization of -(0.75+-0.03) was achieved. (Auth.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] An ECR-ion source for the Juelich isochronous has been designed. It consists of a compact fully superconducting magnet system for two plasma stages in one common cryostat. Some improvement of the performance compared to existing sources is expected since high frequency microwave generators of 28 and 18 GHz can be used for the first and second plasma stage, respectively
