AbstractAbstract
[en] TOTEM is an experiment dedicated to the measurement of the total cross section, elastic scattering and diffraction dissociation at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) which is now being built at CERN. The total cross section will be measured with the luminosity independent method based on the simultaneous measurement of low momentum transfer elastic scattering and of the rate of inelastic interactions with fully inclusive trigger. Elastic scattering will be detected with the Roman pot technique using a suitable optics obtained by properly tuning the quadrupoles in the intersection region. The dipoles system foreseen in the intersection region to first combine and then separate the proton beams will be used to measure the momentum of the proton which are diffractively scattered

AbstractAbstract
[en] Proton-antiproton elastic scattering was measured by the UA4 group at the CERN SPS Collider (√s = 546 GeV) in the Coulomb interference region. The conventional analysis of the t-distribution using the simple exponential form exp(bt) to reproduce the diffraction peak gives for the ratio ρ of the real to the imaginary part of the forward hadronic amplitude the result ρ = 0.24 ± 0.04

AbstractAbstract
[en] The review of the diffraction of hadronic waves is not a complete presentation, but rather material is chosen that could be fitted into a logical structure. Diffraction in optics and its extension to hadronic waves, diffraction in hadron--nucleus collisions, diffraction scattering and dissociation in hadron--hadron collisions, present approaches to the pomeron, and diffraction excitation seen as pomeron exchange are covered

AbstractAbstract
[en] The basic theoretical description of lepton pair production in hadronic collisions is provided, within the general framework of the quark-lepton models, by the model of Drell and Yan. Careful analysis of dilepton data have provided a knowledge of the structure function for pion and kaon, which cannot be studied in a deep-inelastic-scattering experiment. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The TOTEM collaboration has presented an 'Expression of Interest' for the measurement of the total cross section, elastic scattering and diffraction dissociation at the LHC. The experiment is designed to measure the total cross section with the luminosity independent method and accuracy better than 2 mb. Elastic scattering will be studied from the very small momentum transfer region of the Coulomb-strong interaction interference, up to at least |t| = 10 GeV2. The cross section of diffraction dissociation will come out almost as a byproduct. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Recent results from the Auger Observatory on the energy spectrum of high-energy cosmic rays and on the search for correlation with extragalactic objects are presented and discussed. The excess of high-energy events with arrival direction pointing to the region of Centaurus A is discussed in some detail.
