AbstractAbstract
[en] The Power Plant Siting Act of 1971 established the Power Plant Research Program to insure that demands for electric power would be met in a timely manner at a reasonable cost while assuring that the associated environmental impact would be acceptable. The scope of the Program extends to estimating the impact of proposed new generating facilities, evaluating the acceptability of proposed tranmission line routes, assessing the impact of existing generation facilities, and investigating generic issues related to power plant site evaluation and associated environmental and land use considerations. The bibliography is a compilation of all the studies performed for and or by the Power Plant and Environmental Review Division since its inception

AbstractAbstract
[en] The Maryland Power Plant Research Program monitors concentrations of natural, weapons, and power plant produced radionuclides in environmental samples collected from the Chesapeake Bay in the vicinity of the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant (CCNPP) and from the Susquehanna River-Chesapeake Bay system in the vicinity of Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station (PBAPS). The purpose of this monitoring is to determine the fate, transport, and potential effects of power plant-produced radionuclides. This report contains a description of monitoring activities and data collected during the 1996 and 1997 calendar years. Radionuclide concentrations in shellfish, finfish, aquatic vegetation, and sediment were measured using high-resolution gamma spectrometry. Radionuclides in environmental samples originated from natural sources, historic atmospheric weapons testing, and normal operations of CCNPP and PBAPS

AbstractAbstract
[en] High-resolution gamma spectroscopy was used to determine radionuclide concentrations in sediment, finfish, shellfish, and aquatic vegetation collected from the Chesapeake Bay in the vicinity of the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant (CCNPP) during 1985-1986. Low concentrations of radionuclides attributable to CCNPP (Ag-110m, Co-58, Co-60, and Zn-65) were detected in all biota (except edible finfish) and in sediments. Silver-110m was the principal CCNPP-related radionuclide detected in biota (particularly oysters); Co-58 and Co-60 were the principal CCNPP-related radionuclides detected in sediments. CCNPP-related radionuclide concentrations detected in Bay biota and sediments were within ranges observed in previous years and represent small increments to radionuclide concentrations in the Bay relative to natural and weapons test levels

AbstractAbstract
[en] High-resolution gamma spectroscopy was used to determine radionuclide concentrations in over 450 biota and sediment samples collected from the Susquehanna River-Chesapeake Bay system in the vicinity of the Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station (PBAPS) during 1985-1986. Low concentrations of PBAPS-related radionuclides (Zn65, Cs-134, and Cs-137) were detected in finfish, mussels, and crayfish. These PBAPS-related radionuclides and Co-60 were also detected in sediments. I-131 attributable to the Chernobyl reactor accident (April 26, 1986) was detected in environmental samples collected in May 1986. PBAPS-related radionuclide concentrations in biota and sediments represent small increments to the Susquehanna River-Chesapeake Bay system relative to natural and weapons test levels; radionuclide releases by PBAPS, and radiation doses to man, are well within regulatory limits

AbstractAbstract
[en] High-resolution gamma spectroscopy was used to determine radionuclide concentrations in over 700 sediment, finfish, shellfish, and aquatic-vegetation samples collected from the Chesapeake Bay in the vicinity of the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant (CCNPP) during 1981-1984. Naturally-occurring radionuclides (K-40; thorium and uranium decay products) and weapons-test-fallout radionuclides (principally Cs-137) were detected in all samples. The down-Bay transport of radionuclide-labelled particulates was documented in sediments collected from stations located 8 km south of CCNPP. Low concentrations of Sr-90 detected in biota collected at plant-site and Farfield locations were not significantly different and are attributable to weapons-test fallout. The low quantities of radioactivity discharged by CCNPP provide small increments to radionuclide concentrations in the Bay relative to natural and weapons-test levels

AbstractAbstract
[en] The Power Plant Siting Program conducts radiological analyses of environmental samples collected in the vicinity of the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant to determine radioecological impact. The assessment, initiated in 1975, focuses on the ecology of the Chesapeake Bay because aqueous releases represent the greatest radioecological impact pathway. Collections of sediment, finfish, shellfish, miscellaneous invertebrates, algae, and waterfowl were analyzed by high-resolution gamma spectroscopy to determine gamma-emitting radionuclide concentrations. Analysis results and interpretation of studies conducted during 1978-1980 are presented
