[en] Two differential ionization chambers with very low background (+-10-16A) were developed to measure the lifetime variation of a radioactive isotope as a function of its physical and chemical state. It should be possible to measure effects of order 10-4

AbstractAbstract
[en] The isomeric 124.8 keV (4-) level of 90Nb is known to decay by an almost entirely converted M2 transition of 2.38 + - 0.36 keV energy, to the 122.4 keV (6+) level. The 6+ level decays further by a prompt direct transition to the 8+ (Tsub(1/2) = 14.6 h) ground level of 90Nb. The half life of the isomeric state is about 19 s. Several authors have searched for possible 'chemical effects' on the decay rate of this isomeric state. A comparison of all available results seems to indicate that the decay constant of sup(90m)Nb in 4 different chemical environments (Zr and Hf lattices, ZrO and fluorine complex) are equal, but that for sup(90m)Nb in a Nb lattice and in Nb2O5, it is about 4% and 2% larger, respectively. However, these various results were obtained using very different experimental techniques, so the comparison is rather uncertain. The aim of the present experiment was to check this by measuring the decay rate of sup(90m)Nb nuclei implanted in various metallic foils, including Zr, Hf and Nb. (Auth.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The perturbation of the decay constant of sup(90m)Nb implanted in various transition metals (Zr, Nb, Hf, Ta, Ag and Au) has been determined by direct half-life measurements. Particular care was taken to evaluate and minimize possible systematic errors. The maximum relative change found is -(4.5 +- 0.8)%. (orig.)

(orig.)Primary Subject

AbstractAbstract
[en] The 'Δlambda' variation occuring in the decay probability 'lambda' of 52Fe according to its physico-chemical state was investigated. The differential method of measurement with a ionization chamber was used for two 52Fe compounds with very different isomer shifts: the Fe2+ oxalate and Fe3+ oxide (Fe2O3). The corrected value obtained for Δ lambda/lambda with these two Fe2+ and Fe3+ compounds is 5.2+-0.4x10-4

AbstractAbstract
[en] Electron densities at the nucleus are estimated from measurements of the change in electron capture rate of 52Fe in different iron compounds. This leads to a calibration constant α for the 57Fe isomer shift: α=-0.31+-0.04 a03.mm.s-1
