[en] This paper evaluates the effectiveness of dynamic CT in the diagnosis of gastric tumors, especially gastric cancer. Dynamic CT was prospectively performed in 34 patients with gastric tumors (30 gastric cancers, two malignant lymphomas, and two submucosal tumors) after intake of 400 mL water; CT results were compared with results of barium studies, endoscopy, and pathological examinations. As a normal control, 15 patients without gastric tumors were also examined with dynamic CT. Dynamic CT of a normal control revealed the gastric walls as two- or three-layered structures (multilayered pattern): a markedly enhanced inner layer, an intermediate layer of low attenuation, and (sometimes) an outer layer of slightly higher attenuation, which histologically corresponded to the mucosal layer, submucosal layer, and muscular-serosal layer, respectively

[en] 143 data from 12 Heavy Section D.C.I. Cast Bodies of 6 manufacturer in Japan were investigated and statistically analyzed about Mechanical Properties, Metallurgical Conditions and Manufacturing Processes. The following results were concluded. (1) The Mechanical Properties of J.I.S. are reasonable, reliable and reasonably achievable. (2) The Mechanical Properties of D.C.I. are reasonably achievable. (3) The Mechanical Properties of D.C.I. are easily controllable through metallurgical method. (4) D.C.I. (JIS G5504-92) is applicable to the material for spent fuel cask. (J.P.N.)

[en] Twelve patients with cyctic neoplasms of the pancreas (five microcystic adenomas and seven mucinous cystic neoplasms) were examined with MR imaging and the results were compared with those of US, CT, and gross specimen pathology. All microcystic adenomas were revealed easily as lobulated tumors by MR imaging, especially on T2-weighted images. All mucinous cystic neoplasms were composed of multiple compartments of different intensity on T1-weighted or T2-weighted images. US was excellent in showing minute structures such as septa, walls, and solid components. CT could detect calcification most sensitively. MR imaging was considered an equally diagnostic or superior tool in the differentiation of the two entities

[en] To examine specific findings of Warthin's tumor of the parotid gland with use of 1.5-T magnetic resonance (MR) imaging systems, with pathologic correlation. MR imaging studies of six patients with 10 Warthin's tumors were reviewed retrospectively. The results were compared with the pathologic findings and MR imaging findings of 31 other diseases of the parotid gland. T1-weighted images showed low-intensity masses with sharp margins in all cases, sometimes with high-intensity areas (five tumors). These high-intensity areas correlated with cysts found on pathologic study to contain cholesterol. Basically, all of the tumors were revealed as low-intensity masses on T2-weighted images. Geographic high-intensity areas, which corresponded with cysts and areas of predominant lymphoid proliferation, were also demonstrated in six tumors. The most important cause of low intensity on T2-weighted images was considered to be packed mitochondria containing iron-sulfur enzymes. In contrast, all 29 parotid lesions, except for chronic inflammation and high-grade malignancy, had low T1-weighted and high T2-weighted signal intensities. MR imaging by high-Tesla systems could show characteristic findings of bilaterality and/or multiplicity, high-intensity areas on T1-weighted images and low-intensity tumors on T2-weighted images in the diagnosis of Warthin's tumor

[en] This paper examines the capability of MR imaging in differentiating cystic lesions in the maxillomandibular region. MR imaging of 34 patients with cystic lesions in the maxillomandibular region was performed prospectively. After T1-weighted axial imaging, T1-weighted axial and sagittal/coronal imaging with Gd-DTPA and T2-weighted axial imaging was performed. The pathologic examinations of the cases showed 9 ameloblastomas, 13 odontogenic keratocysts, and 11 other types of cysts. MR differentiation between ameloblastoma and cysts was possible in all cases but one. MR images of ameloblastoma showed solid and cystic components, multilocularity, irregularly thickened walls, mural nodules, marked Gd-DTPA enhancement of the wall, and low T1-weighted signal fluids. MR differentiation between various kinds of cysts was difficult without information from conventional radiography, except odontogenic keratocysts. MR images of 17 keratocysts showed cystic patterns, regularly thin walls monolocular cysts, weak Gd-DTPA enhancement of the walls, and inhomogeneous intensity of the contents

[en] This paper presents a functional MR study of the shoulder performed with the positioning in which patients were about to complain of shoulder pain. A 0.064-T permanent MR system was used. The effectiveness of this study was evaluated in the diagnosis of rotator cuff impingement syndrome. Thirteen patients (11 males and two female) were examined prospectively. Three-dimensional Fourier transformation coronal images were obtained with patients' arms at the maximal abduction. They were compared with images obtained while patients' arms were at their sides, chiefly from the viewpoint of severity of impingement and intensity change of the supraspinatus muscle

[en] Superconducting flywheel usually adopts carbon fiber resin mold plastic (CFRP) material that has the basic characteristics such as higher strength and lighter weight. Stabilized rotation of flywheel requires lower unbalance individually about flywheel and supporting disc. And supporting disc is needed to steadily follow the expansion of the inside diameter on the flywheel by centrifugal force and keep the concentricity of the flywheel and its own rotating axis. We developed the flywheel rotor, which was composed of CFRP flywheel, and partially spherical supporting disc made of high strength aluminum. They were combined with expanse fitting each other and most precisely machined to realize the extremely precise axial symmetric shape and enable to be supported and driven at the point near the center of gravity. We manufactured and confirmed that the flywheel rotor rotated up to peripheral speed of 628 m/s quietly without permanent set
