AbstractAbstract
[en] The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) is a general purpose detector currently being constructed for operation at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. One of the main goals of the CMS design is to ensure efficient and accurate identification and reconstruction of muons. This contribution describes two software algorithms that have been developed for reconstructing muons in the CMS experiment. In one approach stand-alone muons are reconstructed in the muon system and matched to a track in the central detector. The other technique starts from central tracks and extrapolates them toward the outer detector to look for compatible muon signatures in the calorimeter and muon chambers. Both approaches are complementary. The expected performance has been studied in detail using Monte Carlo simulation. During the recent Magnet Test and Cosmic Challenge (MTCC) the muon reconstruction was employed successfully to reconstruct cosmic muons traversing a full slice of the CMS detector

AbstractAbstract
[en] The photon radiation in the initial state lowers the energy available for the e+e- collisions; this effect is particularly important at LEP2 energies (above the mass of the Z boson). Being aligned to the beam direction, such initial state radiation is mostly undetected. This article describes the procedure used by the DELPHI experiment at LEP to estimate the effective centre-of-mass energy in hadronic events collected at energies above the Z peak. Typical resolutions ranging from 2 to 3 GeV on the effective center-of-mass energy are achieved, depending on the event topology

AbstractAbstract
[en] Single photons detected by the DELPHI experiment at LEP2 in the years 1997-2000 are reanalysed to investigate the existence of a single extra dimension in a modified ADD scenario with slightly warped large extra dimensions. The data collected at centre-of-mass energies between 180 and 209 GeV for an integrated luminosity of ∝650 pb-1 agree with the predictions of the Standard Model and allow a limit to be set on graviton emission in one large extra dimension. The limit obtained on the fundamental mass scale MD is 1.69 TeV/c2 at 95% CL, with an expected limit of 1.71 TeV/c2. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Measurements are presented of Rb, the ratio of the b anti b cross-section to the q anti q cross-section in e+e- collisions, and the forward-backward asymmetry AFBb at twelve energy points in the range √(s)=130-07 GeV. These results are found to be consistent with the Standard Model expectations. The measurements are used to set limits on new physics scenarios involving contact interactions. (orig.) 2
