[en] Thin, multi-layered films of Ge_xSe_1-x composition have been laser irradiated to produce the corresponding chalcogenide glasses (0.08 x 0.20). A series of laser irradiations have been performed on each film by scanning linearly a CW Gaussian, TEMOO_q mode beam at 1msec^-1 at a given source power and varying that power by small increments between two consecutive parallel scans. Material is observed to transform abruptly and actual threshold power is determined to ± 1 % accuracy. TEM, Raman spectroscopy and optical absorption measurements indicate clearly the formation of a series high quality glasses in the composition range studied here, which properties do evolve continuously with x. The non-equilibrium phase formation experienced in this work proves to be far superior to more conventional processes
