AbstractAbstract
[en] Within a context of development of projects which consume large quantities of forest pellets, this publication addresses the following issues: characterization of the forest pellet for energy (definition, quality parameters, standards and classification), forest resources, deposits and availabilities of wood energy in forest (the French forest as an important source of renewable energy, deposit assessment and harvest predictions, integration of wood energy harvest into a sustainable management of the French forest, wood energy in forest and territorial policies, wood energy valorisation in a forest massif), general principles of forest pellet production (production steps and equipment, production optimisation principles, costs of production operations), ways and costs of forest pellet production (detailed sheets per production way and production costs), storage, drying, packaging and delivery, and supply in forest pellets for wood boilers (prices, consumption according to the boiler type, supply modes and suppliers, technical and contractual securing of supplies). This publication also aims at providing answers to questions which can be asked by landlords of forest properties (interest, consequences of wood energy production, potential assessment, revenue calculation), by forest exploitation managers (harvest planning and organisation, reasons to advice a landlord), by forest exploitation companies and associated commercialisation structures (expected profitability, influence of tree population, necessary equipment for pellet production, pellet storage and drying systems, quality and quantity production, cost and price determination, transport and delivery organisation), heating installers (how to deal with pellet purchase), or public commissioners (pellet purchase mode, expected impact on territorial forests, wood and forest potential for wood energy production, environmental performance of a forest pellet supply, issue of the security of supply)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Whereas mechanisation is part of daily forest exploitation, but raises concerns regarding the impact of forest machines on soils, a first technical guide sets fundamental aspects regarding soils, and reasons for its necessary taking into account in management actions, and regarding also systems of exploitation with machines and accessories currently used in France. It provides all the concerned actors (owners, managers, works companies, forest exploitation companies, forest workers) with information necessary to a better awareness of stakes. It proposes an innovative diagnosis to determine the soil sensitivity to compaction, and to optimise the harvest system selection. Thus, it justifies the implementation of a soil friendly exploitation (soil definition, pressure exerted by machines, factors affecting soils sensitivity to compaction and to erosion, consequences of compaction), describes how to diagnose soil sensitivity, and how to settle partitions, overviews forest exploitation systems (ground logging systems, systems for wood energy, airborne systems, accessories used by forestry machines), and presents aerial cables and other alternate techniques. The second guide aims at promoting wood mobilisation while preserving the environment. It discusses the notion of practicability (new contexts in the wood-forest sectors, impacts of machines on soils and on forest strands, definition of practicability, comparison between soil practicability and partition practicability), formulates several recommendations (in forest management, before forest works, during works, after works, in enterprise), and discusses various issues (services provided by a non-disturbed forest soil, types of potential impacts on soil, possibility of improvement of soil strength, decrease of machine pressure on soil, use of tracks, and so on)

AbstractAbstract
[en] This practical guide (collectively developed with representatives of forestry professionals and timber industries, the academic world and environmental associations) summarizes the main issues for a sustainable harvest of wood for the production of wood-chips. It presents operational decision support tools and good practices aimed at maintaining the chemical fertility and physical integrity of soils, conserving habitats for biodiversity and preserving wetlands and courtyards of water. It also recalls that consultation between owners, forest stakeholders and representatives of civil society is the key to implementing and adapting these recommendations to each situation

AbstractAbstract
[en] After a recall of the context and purpose of the Gerboise project (sound management of wood-energy harvesting), the observation report first presents the observatory of exploitation practices for the provision of forest pellets: national survey among the main wood-energy mobilizers in France, detailed follow-ups of some wood-energy harvesting works, calculations of exports (calculation methodology, results of biomass and mineral-mass exports, calculation assessment and discussion). It also proposes an assessment of aid-to-decision tools (test of an export calculation tool, tools for flow assessments). A synthesis of this report is then provided. The third document is a guide of recommendations for a sustainable harvesting of forest biomass for energy purposes, for any kind of wood harvesting and more particularly for the case of harvesting of wood residues and stumps. It notably outlines reasons to be cautious when harvesting wood, and indicates diagnoses to be performed before starting a harvesting work
