AbstractAbstract
[en] Future developments of data analysis systems for solar-terrestrial research are projected. During the next decade, geophysics and space physics are expected to process an ever increasing amount of data from ground and satellite stations. The results of the data analysis will be used for computer modeling. Solar-terrestrial research will continue to be peformed by small teams of scientists using widely varied and often incompatible computer capabilities but the desire for cooperation will grow stronger with the increase of data, theories, and models to be shared. As a result, desktop conferencing, data storage media, data set structures, supercomputers, computer networks, and computer software are expected to undergo a substantial change. 17 refs

AbstractAbstract
[en] A unique part of the CLEO Detector at CESR is the pressurized wire proportional chamber system for particle identification using measurements of ionization loss (dE/dx) in gaseous argon. Each particle traverses the approximately 80 cm thick detector and leaves 117 ionization samples. Data obtained from e+e- collisions at CESR in the 10 GeV center of mass energy region have been analyzed. Initial results showing the most probable ionization loss of hadrons and leptons as a function of their momenta are presented. Also the geometrical, mechanical and electrical construction of this device is described. (Auth.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] A study of π-d interactions at 13.2 GeV/c has been performed using the SLAC 2-m streamer chamber with a forward proton trigger/spectrometer. In this paper, we discuss baryon-antibaryon final states where a forward produced pp-bar enhancement is seen near 2.1 GeV in both pp-barn and pp-barπ-n final states. The measured cross section for π-d → (n/sub s/)pp-barn is 7.6 +- 1.3 μb and for π-d → ( p/sub s/)pp-barπ-n is 6.6 +- 1.1 μb in this experiment

AbstractAbstract
[en] The authors report an experimental investigation of the properties of electro magnetic shower detectors composed of alternate layers of plastic scintillator and radiator. The various contributions to the pulse-height resolution are characterized, particularly in their dependence upon beam energy, sampling thickness, type of radiator employed, and total counter depth. AbstractAbstract
[en] A wide variety of final states are explored in the baryon exchange reactions π-d → (p/sub s/) X--/sub forward/ and π-d → (n/sub s/) X-p/sub forward/, with a sensitivity of 240 events per microbarn per nucleon. We find no statistically significant evidence for charge -2 exotic mesons or any other new structure over a mass range extending from below the nucleon-antinucleon threshold to about 3.2 GeV
