[en] The discussion of the design for COSY presented in this thesis has shown that it is possible to conceive a storage ring which fulfils the requirements for a series of different experiments. The present design exhibits the neccessary variability in the ion optics in order to optimize the beam properties for a manifold of requirements, for instance high dispersion and kinematical fitting to a certain target position for high-resolution experiments, fitting of the beam properties to the electron cooler, fitting of the ion optics to requirements of the injection, and requirements for high mean luminosity and long stand-by times. In order to perform an experiment - especially with internal target - under optimal conditions however also for the experimentator good knowledges of the possible operational modes of the storage ring are condition. Die Diskussion des in dieser Arbeit dargestellten Entwurfes fuer COSY hat gezeigt, dass es moeglich ist, einen Speicherring zu konzipieren, der die Anforderungen fuer eine Reihe unterschiedlichster Experimente erfuellt. Der vorliegende Entwurf weist die notwendige Variabilitaet in der Ionenoptik auf, um die Strahleneigenschaften fuer eine Vielzahl von Anforderungen zu optimieren, zum Beispiel hohe Dispersion und kinematische Anpassung an einem bestimmten Targetort fuer hochaufloesende Experimente, Anpassung der Strahleigenschaften an den Elektronenkuehler, Anpassung der Ionenoptik an Erfordernisse der Injektion und Anforderungen fuer hohe mittlere Luminositaet und lange Standzeiten. Um ein Experiment - vor allem mit internem Target - bei optimalen Gegebenheiten durchfuehren zu koennen, sind aber auch von Seiten des Experimentators gute Kenntnisse der moeglichen Betriebsmoden des Speicherringes Voraussetzung. [en] This paper discusses the ionoptical lattice design of the cooler storage ring COSY-Julich with respect to the experimental demands for high momentum resolution, high angular momentum resolution and high luminosities at the internal target station TP1. Since COSY will operate as a storage ring chromatic aberrations have to be carefully compensated. It is shown that three families of sextupoles are sufficient to correct both chromaticity and dispersion

AbstractAbstract
[en] This paper considers the rate of beam phase space growth and beam losses caused by thin internal targets in light ion storage rings without beam cooling. The analysis of transverse emittance growth and beam losses by small angle Coulomb scattering is recapitulated. The formalism is extended to analyze the effects of transverse and longitudinal emittance growth by energy loss fluctuations. All target effects can be parametrized by two quantities, the mean square values θ2rms and δ2rms of the small angle scattering and relative momentum straggling per target traversal. This paper presents simple expressions for the transverse and longitudinal emittance growth, the beam survival probability and the quantities θ2rms and δ2rms. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Accelerating a polarized beam in a synchrotron requires the highest possible superperiodicity of the lattice in order to minimize the number of depolarizing intrinsic resonances. However, at the cooler synchrotron COSY the standard lattice to accelerate the beam to maximum momentum has a reduced superperiodicity since the harmful transition energy is shifted upwards during acceleration. This procedure allows internal experiments to take data in the whole acceleration ramp. Unfortunately the reduced superperiodicity excites additional intrinsic resonances. To solve this contrary situation a modified beam optics was found which significantly lowers the strength of these intrinsic resonances. Measurements confirming this theoretical concept are presented
