AbstractAbstract
[en] Following the ideas presented in the proposal to the DoE, we have begun to acquire the equipment needed to design, develop construct and test the electronic and mechanical features of detectors used in High Energy Physics Experiments. A guiding principle for the effort is to achieve integrated electronic and mechanical designs which meet the demanding specifications of the modern hadron collider environment yet minimize costs. This requires state of the art simulation of signal processing as well as detailed calculations of heat transfer and finite element analysis of structural integrity

AbstractAbstract
[en] Twelve examples of the reaction νsub(μ) + N → μ-μ-μ+ + X have been observed at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The characteristics of these events are discussed and possible backgrounds are examined and rejected. One event with three very high momentum muons is described in detail. No single explanation appears to successfully account for these trimuon events. Qualitative features of two muon final states are also presented as are the expectations for the future analysis. Am Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory wurden zwoelf Beispiele der Reaktion νsub(μ) + N → μ-μ-μ+ + X beobachtet. Die Charakteristiken dieser Ereignisse werden diskutiert, moegliche Untergrundbeitraege untersucht und verworfen. Ein Ereignis mit drei Myonen sehr hohen Impulses wird im Detail beschrieben. Keine Interpretation scheint diese Ereignisse mit drei Myonen erfolgreich zu erklaeren. Fuer Endzustaende mit zwei Myonen werden qualitative Eigenschaften angegeben, wie sie in einer zukuenftigen Analyse erwartet werden. (orig.)Primary Subject

[en] The yield of same sign dimuon events in neutrino interactions has been measured to be approximately 10% of the opposite sign rate. The characteristics of these events suggest an origin at the hadronic vertex. A possible explanation in terms of the standard W-S model is discussed

[en] The widespread use of track chambers to examine details of the production vertex in high energy collisions is well known. Recall that strange particles were first identified in cloud chambers by Rochester and Butler in 1947. So when the next flavor, charm, was discovered, it was inevitable that charmed particles would be studied in track chambers. Information concerning the lifetime of these particles obtained in conventional bubble chambers and the preliminary results and potential of high resolution track chambers in this study are reviewed

AbstractAbstract
[en] The measurement of the prompt sngle lepton flux, accomplished in beam dump experiments, is one of the most sensitive probes of the production of new particles in hadronic collisions. The results on this reaction obtained at Fermilab by the Stanford, Cal-Tech, Rochester, and FNAL collaboration and the plans for E-613 at FNAL prepared by the Michigan-Ohio State-Wisconsin-Washington collaboration are discussed. Because the production cross section for new particles is very small compared to conventional pions, kaons, hyperons, etc., a method of suppressing these conventional processes is needed. The beam dump technique exploits the expectation that new particles will have short lifetimes and will decay before interacting while the conventional particles will interact before decaying. Thus the observation of prompt leptons (μ, e, ν) is interpreted as signalling all processes which produce new particles

[en] Preliminary results from a measurement of the prompt nu/sub μ/ and anti nu/sub μ/ fluxes obtained in a beam dump experiment at Fermilab indicate that D anti D charmed particles are produced centrally with a cross section of approx. 20 μb per nucleon. The measured value of the flux of anti nu/sub μ/ is non zero and approximately equal to the nu/sub μ/ flux

[en] The results of a total cross section measurement for the reactions anti np and anti pn are plotted. These results indicate that the annihilation amplitudes are predominantly I = 1 at low energy. The S-wave unitarity limit is shown, and the data support the conclusion drawn from anti pp data that even at the lowest momenta P-wave and higher waves are very important. The technique of using antineutrons to study very low energy antineutrons to study very low energy antinucleon interactions is demonstrated to be feasible

[en] A collaborative study was conducted to determine interlaboratory variations in the measurement of gastrin by radioimmunoassay (RIA). A kit containing reagents for a communal RIA method, as well as test samples containing different amounts of human synthetic gastrin (SHG I) and test samples of serum from a fasting normal patient admixed with varying volumes of serum from a patient with the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, was sent to each collaborating investigator. Each investigator was requested to measure the gastrin concentrations in test samples by means of the communal RIA method, as well as the RIA method utilized in his or her laboratory. Use of the communal RIA method resulted in no significant interlaboratory variation in the determination of gastrin concentration in SHG I test samples and a maximum two- to threefold variation in determination of gastrin serum test samples. In contrast, when individual RIA methods were used to measure gastrin concentrations, the amount of SHG I in test samples reported by one laboratory was significantly different than that reported by the other three. In addition, use of different RIA methods resulted in a 2- to 19-fold interlaboratory variation in serum gastrin measurements and the maximum variation was found when the gastrin in normal fasting serum was measured. Increased variations in results, when different RIA methods were used, may be due to differences in preparation and purification of labeled antigen, to differences in separation of bound from free hormone, and to differences in the antibodies themselves. [en] The results are presented of a preliminary analysis of 5000 ν and 5000 anti-ν events obtained in the high acceptance counter experiment (E-310) at Fermilab. The data show a dependence of a dσ/dy on Esub(ν). There is qualitative agreement of the data with predictions incorporating asymptotic freedom. (author)
