AbstractAbstract
[en] The 10+54Fe nuclear isomeric was excited in the reaction 45Sc(12C, 2pn), and the recoil Fe ions were implanted into the Group IV a metals Ti, Zr, and Hf. The precession frequency of the 54Fe nuclear spin was measured with the targets placed in an external magnetic field using the TDPAD method. It was shown that the implanted Fe ions in all three host metals occupy both substitutional and interstitial lattice sites, and the substitutional Fe ions are strongly magnetic, while interstitial ones are nonmagnetic. The resultant hyperfine fields and magnetic moments of the Fe ions are in excellent agreement with the first principles calculations results. 8 refs.; 1 tab

AbstractAbstract
[en] By application of the TDPAD method in connection with heavy ion reactions and recoil implantation techniques we have probed the magnetic behaviour of 4f and 3d and 4d transition metal ions under extreme variations of the chemical environment. New unstable 4f systems have been found by implanting the oversized 4f ions in small-volume hosts like e.g. W. The implantation of 3d and 4d ions into alkali metal hosts has led to the discovery of a series of anomalies, e.g. the magnetic behaviour of Fe ions in K, Rb and Cs is consistent with a completely localized 3d shell in spin orbit coupling along with a negligible crystal electrical field splitting and has led to the observation of strong local magnetism in 4d systems. The extreme cases of local magnetism have been found in non-alloying systems. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Basic aspects of local magnetism are discussed. The magnetic behaviour of metallic f and d systems is reported, in particular of 4f, 3d, and 4d atoms under extreme changes of the chemical environment, in e.g. nonalloying systems. Such systems can be produced by heavy-ion reactions and recoil implantation. The local susceptibility and spin dynamics of the implanted 4f and d ions can be measured by the time differential perturbed angular γ-ray distribution method. These features include the possibility to probe the single-ion-behaviour in nonalloying systems where large positive or negative lattice pressures are acting on the implanted ion. 38 refs.; 22 figs.; 1 table

AbstractAbstract
[en] The time-differential perturbed angular γ-ray distribution method in connection with heavy-ion reactions and recoil implantation techniques allows microscopic measurements of the local susceptibility and 4f spin dynamics of extremely dilute 4f ions in many simple metals over wide temperature ranges. By applying these techniques a large number of metallic elements in which isolated Ce, Pr, and Nd ions exhibit magnetic instabilities have been found. The local susceptibilities observed in the unstable Pr and Nd systems are strongly reduced compared to both the stable 3+ and 4+ ion behaviors. The various data yield systematic trends of the demagnetization as a function of the matrix, temperature, and the 4f ion species. The author attempts to relate the trends of the magnetic 4f instabilities observed to changes of the strength of the mixing exchange interaction between 4f and conduction electron states. (Auth.)
