[en] The requirements of the optimization component of the system of dose limitation establishes that planning, designing, using or operating sources and practices at any level of the nuclear fuel cycle or outside of it shall be performed in such a manner that exposures are as low as reasonably achievable, economic and social factor being taken into account. Statistical criteria to guarantee some aspects of the packaging and transport process of the low-and intermediate-level radioactive wastes are proposed and discussed. (author)

(autor)Primary Subject

AbstractAbstract
[en] One of the objectives of the Fuel Cycle Department is to develop packages for radioactive wastes, including discarded industrial and radiotherapy sources. This paper describes the work undertaken to qualify a package for transport and final disposal of radium needles, and gives a detailed description of the tests carried out to verify shielding integrity and contaiment system before and after free drop test according to IAEA recomendations for type A, non-especial form packages. Shielding integrity was verified by gamma field scanning over the package surface, using a Geiger-Muller detector and a 60Co gamma source. Containment system was verified by pressurizing the specimen with helium and by searching for leaks a He-leak detector, with sensitivity of 3 x 10-10 atm x cm3/s, air equivalent. The package is described in detail along with the apparatus for the safe handling and packing of the radium needles. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] According Brazilian legislation, individual dose levels at IPEN-CNEN/SP entitle staff to receive 10% of their base salary as additional health allowance, 20 holidays per semester, and special retirement after 25 years of work. The present work presents estimates of cost due to health allowances and recommends reduction of individual dose levels for staff including non-radiological personnel

AbstractAbstract
[en] The monitoring and dosimetry systems used at Industrial Application and Engineering Service Department of the Instituto de Pesquisas Energeticas e Nucleares of the Brazilian Nuclear Energy Commission (GE-IPEN-CNEN/SP) are analyzed,in order to verify the compliance with the condition established by the dose system limitation and the basic radiation protection standards. The criteria about the use of individual dosimetry for persons that work in these facilities are established. In case of an external radiation dosimetry, by using film badge method, a level of 200μGy has been assigned, considering the detection significant threshold. For dose in air due to electromagnetic radiation, using TLD dosimetry of CaSO4:Dy a quarter year significant threshold is 101μGy. A symbiosis between the workplace monitoring and the individual monitoring became necessary for optimization purpose. (authors). 5 refs., 2 tabs., 1 fig

AbstractAbstract
[en] A leaking spent radium-beryllium source was sent to IPEN for treatment as radioactive waste. In order to verify the viability of the utilization of a standard package for radium sources, the two-dimensional discrete ordinates radiation transport code DOT-3.5 was used. The theoretical results for the surface of the packaging were in good agreement with the measured values. (author)
