AbstractAbstract
[en] In this paper it shall be tried to strike the balance after the first years of experimenting at the on-line mass separator of the GSI Darmstadt and to present the main results of the study of very neutron deficient isotopes in the mass range 90-150 as well as the resulting questions for further experiments. First some foundations concerning the properties of neutron deficient nuclei and the measuring method are explained. The results and their interpretation are discussed using examples for the alpha decay, the beta decay, the mass-energy-area, and the proton-drip line. Finally the obtained results are summarized, and an outlook to further studies of nuclear properties far from beta stability is given. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Charged-particle emission from nuclear groundstates or isomeric states is reviewed with particular emphasis on recent results. The proton-radioactive states, identified near 100Sn and 146Gd, yield tentative evidence for a relation between spectroscopic factor and nuclear shape. Examples for recent alpha-decay work include a discussion of 0+→0+ groundstate-to-groundstate transitions and of 0+→01+ fine-structure transitions in the lead region. For very proton-rich isotopes above 100Sn, both proton, alpha and cluster emission has been found, 114Ba representing the lightest cluster-radioactive nucleus identified so far. This region of the chart of nuclides may thus be suitable for testing theoretical models for charged-particle decay. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The doubly closed-shell nucleus 50100Sn50 has so far not been reached experimentally. The investigations of proton-rich nuclei in its neighbourhood, however, have made considerable progress in recent years. In this report, I would like to present results obtained at the GSI mass separator on-line to the heavy-ion accelerator UNILAC. In chapter 2 the measurements of decay properties and the interpretation of the resulting nuclear-structure information are described. Subsequently, properties of neutron-deficient isotopes of indium (Z=49), as deduced from collinear laser spectroscopy, are discussed (chapter 3). Chapter 4 deals with mass-excess value (''masses''), mass differences and the localization of the proton drip line in light odd-Z isotopes above tin. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] In this report we want to give a few examples of recent investigations of nuclei far from stability, performed at the mass separator on-line to the heavy-ion accelerator UNILAC at GSI Darmstadt. Results are presented for neutron-rich isotopes produced via multi-nucleon transfer reactions. Subsequently, measurements of decay properties and the interpretation of the resulting nuclear structure information are described for neutron-deficient isotopes in the area around tin, produced via fusion-evaporation reactions. Particular emphasis is put on the determination of Q values and their importance in linking to masses and to the localization of the proton drip line in light odd-Z isotopes above tin, properties of neutron-deficient isotopes of indium (Z=49) and tin (Z=50), as deduced from collinear laser spectroscopy, are discussed. AbstractAbstract
[en] An important part of modern nuclear-structure studies is devoted to nuclei far from stability, also called exotic nuclei. The impressive recent progress in the latter field has been possible due the development of experimental techniques, such as isotope separation on-line (ISOL) and zero-degree magnetic spectrometers. A considerable part of this review deals with these experimental methods. Examples for recent investigations of exotic nuclei will be given with emphasis on the binding-energy surface, on nuclear shapes, and on decay spectroscopy. Nuclear structure of astrophysical relevance will also be discussed. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Nuclei far from stability are produced in reactions with heavy-ion beams between 16O and 238U from the UNILAC with energies between 4 and 12 MeV/u and investigated by using on-line mass separation. Recent results are presented from decay spectroscopy of neutron-rich isotopes, neutron-deficient isotopes around 100Sn and 146Gd and collinear laser spectroscopy of light indium and tin isotopes. AbstractAbstract
[en] Some recent decay studies of very proton-rich nuclei are presented as examples for nuclear-structure investigations far from the line of beta stability. Most of these investigations are based on heavy-ion beams from the accelerators UNILAC (5 to 20 MeV/u) or GANIL (<85 MeV/u) in combination with an on-line mass separator or a zero-degree spectrometer, respectively. The prospects for the latter type of instrument on-line to SIS (<2 GeV/u) are also described. (author)
